Unless the bag you're trying to replace contains the bag you're trying to replace it with.
This makes sense. It'd be like trying to put a portable hole in a bag of holding, or vice versa. Or dividing by zero. :)
Actually, DnD has a description for what happens. In the DM's guide, which I just can't find.
I think they, along with their contents, are both destroyed/thrown into two universes ever collapsing into and being collapsed into by each other, unable to ever be retrieved (except perhaps by wish or miracle if the campaign allows, or maybe by intervention of a deity), and it opens a dimensional rift to a random other dimensional plane, most likely the place that you travel through to go to all other planes (can't remember it's name).

from the d20 SRD
:
If a Bag of Holding is placed within a Portable Hole a rift to the Astral Plane is torn in the space. Bag and hole alike are sucked into the void and forever lost. If a Portable Hole is placed within a Bag of Holding, it opens a gate to the Astral Plane. The hole, the bag, and any creatures within a 10-foot radius are drawn there, destroying the Portable Hole and Bag of Holding in the process.

The one thing I have learned about this game is not really one simple thing, it is more like a few things
first almost no one cares if you are a low level newbie you should just "know" stuff. If your bigger than another player in level or have been playing longer than that person the lower level person should "Bow Down because they are Stupid" (I have played a lot of FF X KH 1 & 2 LOZ ect.) I know I'm not Warcraft knowledgeable when it comes to some things but I know enough that it is totally wrong to cheat in a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) because you are no longer just f-ing yourself but everyone else. Also it is good to fully heal your party prior to going after the next kill as without your healer or tank you are f-ing everyone in the party.
I've also learned that no one really likes a low level player!
Even though we all start out that way in every game we play.

I recently learned that there is a crashed race car in the cliffs near the shimmering flats raceway. I simply stared in amazement.
It gets better. Go look at the hill on the other side of the mountain, in Tanaris.
This reminds me: Lots of people know about the Naga cave on the island in Ferelas. Who, however, knows about the underwater passage to the hidden Naga temple?

No, it would be like taking a bag out of an expanded bag with a bunch of stuff in it, then upending the second bag into the first bag. Completely plausible.
And by the way it is perfectly possible to put a
portable hole
into any bag you'd like to, unless it is for a profession

Oh looks like a fun thread!
Something I learned pretty recently (and I've been playing for a while as well!):
When you are "upgrading" new bags (let's say from 16 slot to 20 slot) you can just drag the new bag over the old one, and all the contents will be placed in the new bag!
I used to manually make the old bag empty, unequip it, and then equip the new bag, so this is way faster.
.... 0.0
I just upgraded all my (6) lvl 80's Frostweave Bags to Glacial Bags... /facedesk /facedesk /facedesk
I didn't realise until about 6 months ago that SSC was in the Coilfang Reservoir. I even have the fishing achievement there :o In my defence though I was summoned in through a warlock wardrobe the only time I ever went there.
The most recent thing I learned was that the
Turtle
tome has a drop rate of less than 100%. I've been begged/bribed/cajoled into running that stupid fish-boss a total of 8 times since I hit 80 (in the end I bought 3 stacks of those stupid lures, just to avoid future trips to see Pat) and it's dropped on 7 of 8 kills. Yeah, that last one was a shock - I thought it was bugged :o
