Stop trying to equate that with downloading legit software (like Curse Client) from legit sites (like Curse). Seriously, it makes you sound like either an idiot or some kind of shill for a competing addon site.
To be fair, "legit" sites like Curse are still potential sources of infection; awhile back I remember Curse getting some flack because one of the add-ons they distributed had been hacked to include a malicious file.
But I do agree: That has nothing to with the Curse Client, or using it to install add-ons, nor was it actually Curse's fault (save that they slipped up and didn't scan the add-on before posting it for distribution). You would have gotten infected by that corrupted add-on just as easily if you had manually downloaded the add-on.

The surprising thing for me with this whole experience was that the game wasn't even installed on my computer when it happened. The account was inactive for almost two months and I hadn't even logged in to worldofwarcraft.com, let alone the game itself or any other gaming websites
That doesnt mean you werent compromised normally though.
Hackers are in just about all cases gladfarmers of one type or another, and if they dont need gold on your realm, or whatever other circumstance there is no reason to put time and effort into your account at the moment, so you are put into a list of accounts they will use when they need it. so you could have been compromised a year ago, but not "violated" until today because they simply didnt need it.
As Blizz is working against them they also know they have limited time to hold the gold, so hacking your account directly and just stocklpiling it wouldnt work for them.

This was actually my suspicion as well. My guess is that a lot of the gold farming sites have a large backlog of compromised accounts, and they only put them into operation when they need them so that they don't wind up stripped of all their stolen accounts at once.

it sucks if you're in a country where you can't get an authenticator. I got mine for my Iphone, so didn't have to buy one. they need to make it free for everyone. whether they take their time and send EVERYONE with an ACTIVE account one or make the authenticator available for DL on phones or even a free program you can DL to your desktop. And obviously, telling everyone they should have one and need to get one if they don't would not include those who can't. asshat out,
