Is the N word like normal for people now?

In my experience there has been a distinct difference between the -a and the -er version. In my first months in the US, I was quite confused by the situation, because in my home language we don't really use the phrase "African American" (or афроамериканец, if you are a trivia fan) - we use "the N word", the bad boy n***er. Not out of spite or hate, but because we have no other word for it. We don't mean to insult with it, no more than you would if you called a female dog a bitch.
Back on topic now though. Words change meanings over time. Ever seen a paddy wagon? Those police cars/vans? Yea, paddy is an old derogatory word for "Irish", because vans of similar design were used to round up the Irish in the US some 1-2 centuries ago. Do you even consider that when you hear or say the word - do you consider that there may be Irish people you are insulting? I doubt it.
I agree that the word is used more freely that I wish it were, but life is such. I don't think it will go out of use - my hope is that it will become the new "paddy". Just another word the original meaning of which is lost.

N***a is said by ghetto people who don't talk properly. N***a and n***er are the same word, but the first is a mispronunciation of the second. So saying that n***a is an okay word and n***er is a bad word is wrong, because they are both the same word.
Think about it... ghetto people replace the "-er" sound with an "-a" sound all the time. That doesn't mean they are making new words, they are just mispronouncing words.

Are you talking about Laihendi or the people who mispronounce words by saying "-a" instead of "-er"?
Post by
Laihendi
By ghetto people, Laihendi means anyone who lives in the ghetto, or who imitates people who live in the ghetto. You seem to be the one associating black people and lack of education with the ghetto...
And no, they are not completely different. As Laihendi said before, one is a mispronunciation of the other. Brotha is a mispronunciation of brother. Sista is a mispronunciation of sister. N*gga is a mispronunciation of n*gger.
Okay, the above post was deleted, so that's why this post seems so random.

I say
nigg@
a lot, trust me I know what it means and when I do say it I never use it to put down a african american and because somebody lives in the ghetto they just automaticly say nigg@?
Post by
Laihendi
Laihendi never said n*gga has to be or even is a bad word. And yes, it is common for people who live in the "ghetto" part of town to have poor grammar and to mispronounce words. Saying that might offend people, but not saying it doesn't make it any less true.

Okay? I grew up in the "ghetto" as you so called it. I dont have poor grammer and mispronounce words. I have a job that requires me to talk very proper. It all depends on the
CONTEXT
of how you use the word.

Laihendi wasn't saying everyone was like that, he was talking about the group in general. And it isn't really surprising either, since people from the very poor parts of town
generally
don't get as good of an education as those from the more affluent parts of town.
Yeah, Laihendi wasn't trying to offend anyone.

So because somebody may have poor education that every time they say nigg@ they mean to put down a african american?
Post by
Laihendi
What are you talking about? Laihendi has not commented on whether n*gga/n*gger is a bad word or not. You're just putting words in his mouth.
Post by
R1TeR
No but your saying they mean the same thing and they dont.

He's saying they're the same word. Words mean different things to different people.

Yeah they may mean the same thing to you, but they mean completely different things to me.

Laihendi doesn't understand the concept of one word having two completely unrelated meanings.
Make that two nearly opposite meanings.

why're you talking in 3rd person? all the time?
Laihendi has been that way ever since the accident.
Gay is often used as a word to describe something they do not like. Many of these same people consider being gay to be a bad thing, and discriminate against homosexuals. Even for those who do not discriminate, because this country (the US) and many others have a long history of discriminating against homosexuals, being
gay
is considered a bad thing by default. So because of this, "gay" is used to give something a negative connotation.
But n*gger being a racial slur and a word of... friendship (?) does not make sense to Laihendi.
