You can think of it like filling a bucket with a hose (bad analogy, but it's the best I could come up with). If you just let the hose run and fill the bucket even when it's filled to the brim, you're just wasting water. Obviously if you're putting water in a bucket you'll want to use it for something, so you'll have to empty it periodically. So rather than letting water run over the edge, you should get rid of some when you have excess, but leave enough for your vital purpose.
Oh no the bucket is getting filled up, i should go water some daisies. But still keep enough water in the bucket so i can extinguish the fire over there.
:D i like your analogy, very exploitable

It's not a waste to use what you have at 100% rage at all. It costs 30 rage to use HS/Cleave and almost instantly you will gain that 30 back giving you enough rage to use for vital abilities. I frequently find myself at 100 rage and using a rage dump not only increases my damage done it increases my DPS ever so slightly. It's just a good way to control your rage without "wasting" it by staying at 100 until your GCD is up.

Sorry to come into the thread kind of late. I'm a new player who rolled a warrior. I still don't understand what the point of dumping rage is. I thought rage was unlimited so you can't possibly "waste" rage like you would water because water's a limited resource, it will eventually run out, whereas rage can constantly be generated (granted your rage-inducing abilities aren't on CD). It seems to me that dumping rage would be more of a hassle because not only do I have to use extra abilities to dump it, I have to be measure how much rage I need to leave for my next attacks. Leaving it at 100% or whatever will guarantee that I have enough rage and when I attack again some will be used up.
Also doesn't rage go down over time anyway so I wouldn't have to manually dump it? The only way I can see max rage bothering me is if my damage output or my abilities get negatively affected by it. If the only problem is that I would be "wasting" rage then big whoop cause I have infinite more where that came from. Again, I'm a new player so it's very very possible that I'm missing something here. Thanks!
Next time do a new thread, its standard to not "revive" a old thread.
To answer your question, you want to dump rage to maximize your damage output. The term wasting rage is that you have rage going unused. If your at 95 rage and get 25 rage coming in, then you'll be capped at 100 and have 20 rage doing nothing.
However if you use a heroic strike before you get the new rage coming in, then you will be at 90 rage and a heroic strike more out.
Rage dumping is for maximizing dps, you can deal to be without but you wont be at the full potential.

"Rage dumping" is a very bad term that causes a lot of confusion.
You aren't actually dumping rage but using it wisely.
The key point is to use weak abilities that are not on the global cool down (GCD) , to use the rage
when you have a lot
, until the GCD resets.
You should then stop using these weak abilities and go back to the strong ones on the GCD.
The skill is to
monitor
the rage pool, and if it is low
do nothing
and let it build up rather than keep it low by using these weak abilities.
If you don't do this then you are really "dumping rage" because once your powerful abilities are available you will no longer have the valuable rage that you need to use them.
Obviously our brains can't get round the idea that doing nothing can give you better damage results than banging even the weakest abilities, so most people hit any keys that are available.(##RESPBREAK##)16##DELIM##asakawa##DELIM##Please be aware of the age of threads before posting.
