For death knights particularly. what is better for tanking in general (without chill of the throne applied) a avoidance death knight gemming for parry and dodge or just slamming on the 30 Stams? Im aware that all high end raiding tanks stack stam but still wouldant they be equal? and this applies for blood tanking.

Well I think its just better to stack stam because its always a benefit whereas with the other its completely up to RNG, and well whats better to have? a permament boost or relying on luck to keep you alive?

Ya i understand now. thanks. its just ud rather have Stam hold up the entire fight than Avoidance holding up only a fraction.

High debated topic. Min/maxers will always sigh away from RNG. But RNG can be padded in your favor and I think a lot of people fail to see that. The more you increase your overall chance (total avoidance, IE, dodge+parry+miss) to avoid an attack completely, the more often you see RNG work in your favor.
But, I believe they should be balanced.
A +30 stam gem gives 300hp. No raid level trash mob or boss hits for anywhere that low. 300hp will must likely not save your life while tanking a boss, but avoiding more attacks in a given time period will.
But avoidance has dimishing returns and stamina doesn't?
While stamina does not have a dimishing returns value, if your avoidance is so low, due to pure stamina gemming, that you get hit every single time the boss swings (since you have not done anything to pad RNG more towards your favor), your healers will hate you and you might die more than you think you should be. I have a healer and a tank and personally, stamina tanks are a real pain to heal. Yes, tanks already get constantly spammed heals, but I see more stam tanks come closer to death or die.
Gem for straight dodge? Nah. Gem for straight parry? Nah. Gem for straight stamina? Nah. Gem for all of them plus some extra miss.
The +def/+stam gem. Don't get me wrong. All of my blue/prismatic sockets have +30stam gems in them. But my yellows have these hidden gems in them. The provide you with a decent boost to every avoidance stat (less DR), gives a healthy chunk of stamina(for all you HP fiends) and increases the overall effectiveness of IBF. Yes, IBF.
Did you know that it is possible to become immune to all physical while IBF is popped. On my DK, my unbuffed armor, gives me just under 70% damage reduction. Then you add the 30+% all damage reduction (+ bonus reduction from defense over 540) from UBA and bam, physical damage is negated. IBF also mitigates magic damage as an extra bonus.
Balance. You must balance yourself to reach your fullest potential.

Everything in this post can be counter-argumented by simply saying: "Says the Gnome Tank.".
;D
Tanking is not kung fu. Stamina and avoidance are not ying and yang. Raw stamina is teh best. Also the IBF damage reduction does not really work that way. :3
edit: Also, if you wanna gem for anything besides stam, gem for threat/damage.

instead of having a set gemmed for stam and one gemmed for avoidance. just get 2 stam trinkets and 2 avoidance trinkets. switch those out for fights where you want more avoidance. it's not a huge difference but it's really a pain in the ass to have that much gear.
