Because fire only passes Arcane at a relatively high gear lvl ...

Fire is a lot more movement friendly. In arcane, movement = 0 dps (unless you throw out an arcane barrage or something on the go). In fire, while you're moving, you still have ignite, LB, and pyro dot damage ticking (as well as the occasional well timed instant pyro proc), so it's a little more forgiving, and it often ends up causing more damage done by the end of the fight than arcane would on the movement heavy fights of ICC.
Since it was recently buffed to only be slightly behind arcane in a straight burn fight, it tends to edge it out with the above in mind.
Also, it's a lot more fun for people who are sick of arcane.
AAAANNNDDDDD it's good for LB spam on the vile spirits in the LK encounter.
Think that covers everything...

but I ranked 3rd overall in damage done, and increased my personal damage from arcane by 20%.
Im sure that had little to do with the 10 living bombs up on those vile spirits?

Hi, I'm just wondering why some of the high-end raiding mages are respeccing from arcane to fire and if I should be, too. I'm going for 12/12 in ICC10 and staying around 10/12 or so in ICC25 for the rest of the expansion.
All informative responses are appreciated :)
Ryo.
The brutally truthful answer to this is because they don't think for themselves.
If you had tuned into this forum two months ago and suggested Fire as a PvE spec, you would have been crucified. Why would you ask such a stupid question?
Everyone
leet goes arcane.
So why is everyone changing? Because the second guild in the world to down Arthas in 25-man Heroic, and the first to do so with a Mage in their composition...did it with a Fire mage. My God, the sea change in threads the following week. I just had to chuckle.
Have fun playing the game.

You seemed to forget about them buffing fire? Maybe you missed those patch notes? When something gets buffed and will now do more damage then the other spec, people change. Arcane got buffed, everyone switched in ToC, now part way through ICC fire gets buffed, every goes fire.
Have fun being late to the party.
Link some threads of Fire being recommended at the patch.

Hmmm....sarcasm in place of evidence.
Again, I didn't see anyone pimping fire at the patch. I didn't see anybody on this site say a word about it until the second Glass Cannon Shatters thread. There might have been a few, but I imagine they were probably excoriated for their audacity.
The number of posters in here who actually analyze and review the most prevalent suggestions are painfully few. I've caught more than one poster arrogantly passing along PvP advice that I proved to be concretely untrue. I'm sure the same happens in PvE, but I don't follow it as closely.
