Why does my pet keep changing targets?

And how do I keep him from doing that? I'm a lvl 38 hunter and when encountering a mob I send my pet to attack (a wolf) and when a second (or third or...) mob comes up my wolf changes targets, causing a) a lot less damage on the one I'm shooting and b) the one I'm shooting changes aggro onto me and suddenly I'm doing even less damage and taking a lot more than I should. I want my pet to focus on the target that I originally sent him on so that I can down that one quickly and then move on to the next. I have my pet on defensive stance. Should I put him on passive? If I do that, then it adds an extra step to attacking a mob because I can't just shoot and have him run to the attack. Oh, and when multiple mobs are involved my pet constantly changes target. While I would guess that this behavior is to maintain aggro on as many mobs as possible, it simply does not work. Again, if I put him on passive and the current target dies, I have to manually send him after the next one which adds extra work on my part on something that shouldn't (IMNSHO) be so involved.

try pressing the ATtack button if your pet is having trouble making its mind up. Or maybe get a bear or something with better AI

If your Pet is in defensive, it will attack the next target that is attacking you, or that you are attacking. If you don't want that, it should be in Passive, especially in Raids.
Cheers.

Could it be my pet's talent build? I've not really researched what I should do with that. And why a bear?

Thank you very much! Very helpful links. I'm off to snag a bear. (I already have a lion, perhaps I should go for a tiger next?)

Using pet attack with your pet in defensive will keep your pet on the target you send him to until it dies. I macro'd pet attack to Hunter's Mark so I don't have to hit ctrl+1 or click pet attack for every pull.

Now the -reason- that this is happening.. Just like any hostile npc, your pet has an aggro table. If it feels more threatened by another mob, it will switch unless you gave it a specific mob to attack (via ctrl-1). However, if you just have it on defensie and attacked the mob, or were attacked by someone, then yes, he can switch off and does have his own aggro table.

Adding a simple macro to one of your spells would help
example/petattack
/cast Arcane Shot
then put that button in for where your Arcane shot is currently and your pet will always attack whatever you arcane shot, the command /petattackcan be macro'ed with any shot or ability and will make the pet attack your current target, great for raiding keeps your pet from looking retarded on fights like razorscale where they can't reach the boss.
