...they DCed for awhile...
This doesn't happen to me. Maybe
I
will DC, but my character will stand in whatever is around and auto-shoot. Sometimes people don't know I've been gone until the message saying " has come online."
Anyway, I always keep my recount on damage done, 9/10 DPS will be fairly close to that. Usually the odd balls are people that started late (AFK for readycheck but still pulled, thumb up but, etc) and just bombed their way up the charts.

Well at 80, the only reason you would have high dps and low damage, is if you burst out a ton of dps, and then completely stop attacking. He's probably just lazy

and northernsky, you know you can show recount for just a boss, right? Nobody cares about trash dps but on bosses, its nice to see who's on top and who's falling behind

High DPS but low damage means that the player likely knows how to prepare (ie. good spec, gearing, and rotation), but is failing on fight execution.
Things like poor reaction time, dying a lot, or just general laziness / not paying attention can all result in high dps but low dps time and total damage done.
Granted deaths aren't always the fault of the DPS (healers fail too), but more often than not they are, and if this is something that is happening consistently it certainly isn't a good thing.
Given a good enough sample size, Damage Done on boss fights is certainly a more valuable metric than DPS.

First rule: Dont die.
Very often high dps = high threat. If your tanks suck you will die sooner or later.
With 8-8.5k burst dps i am an agro hog, if i dont MD on the engage
i will
pull agro, or at least ill get a Omen warning.
I agree with the rule, but Hunters should never have a problem with pulling aggro from a boss. We have the best threat reduction abilities in the game with MD and FD plus we generally get to stand at long range so if we do F up and pull threat, we often still have time to FD before the boss gets to us.

As a MM hunter my overall damage, counting trash, is usually lower on the list. I don't have good enough mana regen yet, so I throw up Aspect of the Viper which kills my output. On boss fights, where my mana pool lasts the whole fight, my overall damage and dps is right on par with everyone else. Near my gearscore anyway.
Note that this is in Heroics. My hunter isnt geared well enough to do much more than Naxx.
Meters should be used to diagnose problems. Either with your rotation or spec. Or a raid leader could use one to diagnose a problem with a player who isnt pulling their weight. Or to view raid DPS in order to develop strategies for certain bosses. Either way, if you look at GS and DPS as the only measuring tool then you're not getting enough information.
They're tools, not rules.

They won't tell you what you're doing wrong, just how much damage and what 3 skills did the most damage.
You know if you click an individual in the list, it will pop up and show you every single skill they used throughout the fight, how many times, how many crits, how many misses, etc...
