I don't know that just sounds like fantasy cliches...
Evil Elf warlocks that live in the Cold? I haven't heard of many of those...

Well, some of these references may be fantasy cliches. But, it does add to the list of inspirations provided that the references were created before the aspect of Warcraft that they are referenced to.

Dark elves portals betrayals mage who ends up extremely powerful, that kind of stuff.
Well, the thing is the Riftwar Series' first book was released in 1982...
Way before that kind of stuff became popular.

D&D and LotR were out before that heh.

I was mainly talking about portals between worlds in Fantasy instead of Sci-Fi.

So I figure this is a cool thread and deserves a necro.
You know how we were discussing that Draenei were largely based on Persian culture? While browsing for a name for my Man'ari Eredar (chose Azad for free), I found that Adel (A'dal) is the Persian name representing righteousness.

I still wager gypsies for the draenei, but I'm sure India may have been a part of Persia for some time....

If we're referencing mainstream entertainment (see: Riftwar) as well as history and myth, draenei seem to be somewhat inspired by S.L. Viehl's Jorenians. Well, at least as far as "big, blue, painfully honorable, and glowy-eyed" goes.
And they're led by a Babylon 5 shout-out. And the devil (that is, the Father of Lies) has it in for him.

More Middle-Earth.
Mirkwood = Ashenvale
Lothlorien = Quel'thalas

Heck, Exodar/Exodus...
Of course, she's a Judeophile to a fault, so take it with a grain of salt.

Which also applies to gypsies. Add in the Romanian sounding accents and, well...

Hold up now.
If we're gonna talk about Charles II and that era then you guys better shut the %^&* up about it. I am so sick of that period in history, I swear to god that I hate my country's gay history sometimes.
Uuuh when you do like 20 Weeks on the same dull bastard, you will understand.
Calm down, my little limey...
It's okay... deep breaths.
Cromwell was a *!@#.

Every
country has skeletons. :P
And... I wish I spent 5 weeks on a British monarch rather than Hitler's rise to power and Soviet Russia. It would be so much easier. :|

And or not depressing.
That depends on the monarch.

I've been thinking that the Goblins represent America (or the British colonies). They are based almost completely on money (Thus America), and they like to settle new places (thus the British colonies).
I'm thinking more Colonial North America tbh, with the new colonies whose only point was to make money (kinda like Booty Bay/Ratchet/Everlook, colonies built in new places for money).
