If the pet is on Defensive and blundering into melee...don't hold your breath asking for pet heals! ESPECIALLY if you didn't turn Growl off!
Hmmm....you mean aggressive right?
Well, unless you're dealing with clueless toons in Heirloom gear. If a Shaman wearing those ridiculous shoulders pulls aggro off the tank and dies, I suggest you write down the name of his guild, make an alt on his server, and have a chat with his GM. It's for their own good.
I suggest you don't do this.

LOL, I had a pally the other day (pallysmash?) tanking COS at 77 in those spell power shoulders. Of course I asked about them as my shaman who was healing that run had them on too.
I don't mind people in Heirloom gear, its people who wear it on all their toons when not appropriate because they are too cheap to buy the right gear. Really, this pally had them on as tank. He was spike damage city (and a jump bunny till I convinced him by demonstration that jumping reset his swing timer)
Healing below heroics is a whole 'nuther world. Amazing some of the crap you get and amazing are some of the tanks/dps you encounter too. Pets, hell if I can I heal them too then I will. Doesn't matter to me. It all comes down to reducing down time. My regen and play style is such that unless I have a poor tank (gear or play) I have mana to spare
Dks in the tattered dreadmist robe......

Ive always played DPS as my first attempt at playing a healer class (shammie) failed miserably as I was an uber nube.
Recently, I've gotten really, really bored with 2 level 80 DPS classes (Warlock, Death Knight. I don't tank. bad things happen to good people), and decided I'd give my long forgotten druid a try. I always like the druid ability to turn in to a cat(no lie, only reason he was ever gotten up to 20 to begin with), so I figured between him and my equal-level shammie, I'd give him a go. originally was feral, but during one PuG over the LFD system, I found myself off healing in a group of 4. Figured I'd give full healing a try.
I have a very simple setup heal wise: I keep the tank in the focus frame. in case his health drops substantially, I can fix quickly. Also, I use Grid and GridStatusMissingBuffs. On top, I throw my rejuv/regrowth onto the bottom corners. How I heal is through mouseover macros. They're really easy to make, especially if you do them right. I heal ANYONE. Tank gets priority, but if i notice the DPS dying in time, i throw a regrowth on them. for most DPS, this keeps them alive and us from wiping. Also, i have grid showing the pets. why? both of the 80s are pet classes. there are no words to express how annoying it is when that damn thing dies. same thing for the pets, they get a lower priority, but i will throw a rejuv/regrowth in case i think they may die.
It's actually kind of fun to me, then again 80+levels of pure dps classes would probably do that to you. So, when I'm tired of emblem farming i go and level the druid through the dungeons. i can get a level or 2 a day depending on how I feel. pretty soon I'll have him go full resto (he's a few points into balance for the mana reduction/hot increase) to get the healtree form.
Oh and for those wondering, my heal macros are as followed
#showtooltip
/cast Name of Heal Spell
(it checks my mouseover target, if it exists, and I can't harm it, if 1 of those conditions isn't meant, it targets me
instead. useful when not in groups, well at least i think so)
By the way, Warlocks:
My Main's a lock, love the gameplay and semi-evil-ness of them. and yes, the lifetap glyph is awesome, HOWEVER learn when the hell , and HOW the hell to use it. The glyph doesn't care if you use max rank lifetap, so if you're lifetap-ing for the buff, make a damn macro and use rank 1. at higher levels, you barely notice the change in health. Its a really easy macro to make. Use the ACTUAL lifetap when you
actually need the mana
. On my death knight we had the dumbest lock... ever. there are no words to describe his stupidity.
/cast Life Tap(Rank 1) ; Life Tap
OR if you think you'll forget
/cast Life Tap; Life Tap(Rank 1)

While I can see not healing pets in a raid, I really don't know how some of you make it through those boring overgeared heroic runs. I FoL anything that so much as gets sneezed on.
I'd like to add that my hunter's pet dies all the time. Passive AOE avoidance doesn't mean anything when he's too stupid to get out of the void zone, stop attacking something with reflective damage, or any host of other things that (most) players are smart enough to do. Mend Pet is a gimmick.
As for locks, all I have to say is that I've noticed more and more of them lifetapping at the absolute worst times (ie midfight instead of between fights). I've literally seen a few sit at low mana while I drink, then suicide seconds after the pull.

I think with locks, when you're soloing, you can get used to redlining your health to pop off that last spell. Also, people have convinced themselves that everything is such a "faceroll" now that nobody really pays attention or behaves reasonably in heroics or old content. Then, when the group wipes, they complain about the healer/tank/whoever, instead of taking responsibility for their stupid tricks.

The only time I heal a pet is with my Wild Growth, unintentionally because the pet has some kind of damage...which is annoying because sometimes I use WG as a buffer when I know there will AoE damage soon.
