Ubuntu Problems

I have been running WoW on Ubuntu for quite a while now, had a few issues here and there, but always managed to resolve them.
Today after installing the new patch, I get
Runtime Error!
Program C:\ Program Files\World of Warcraft\WoW.exe
R6034
An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly
If anyone has any further info or experience with what this error message is about, help is appreciated!
Oh, and I will of course be checking google and ubuntu/linux web pages for more info as well, just wanted to find out if anyone had some WoW specific knowledge about the problem.

What versions of Ubuntu and Wine are you running?

Looks like this is a known issue
Official Forums thread
WineHQ thread
Ubuntu release 9.10
Still trying to figure out which Wine release >.<
That info seems to be more closely guarded than Fort Knox. Either that or I am having an early-onset "senior moment" and it's right under my nose hiding in plain sight.
Edit: It WAS in plain sight.
Wine 1.1.14

And... FIXED!
What did the trick for my machine was
Direct downloading
this stuff and installing.
Server's still down yadda yadda, but at least I won't have to mess around with all this nonsense once it's back up!

You can also use
winetricks
to easily download stuff like this in the future as well. Also, I would suggest you upgrade wine (and keep it up-to-date).

I attempted to use winetricks first to resolve the issue, however it did not work for me (and several others).
I did just update Wine to 1.2, and now WoW.exe will not run at all, so upgrading wasn't exactly a positive step as it worked fine when it was at version 1.14, and now does not.
I regularly update the system using the update manager in Ubuntu. I guess I should have stuck with the info it gave me when it said all packages were up to date, as the installed versions were at least stable.

The wine versions in the Ubuntu repository are extremely old. The latest version is 1.1.34 which is only available via Wine's repository (more information available
here
) and is generally more stable than the "stable" version.
Edit: I am running WoW just fine on 1.1.33.

Well, if I can get 1.33 or 1.34 I will as of right now 1.2 has so severely messed up my stuff that my computer doesn't even recognize that Wine exists >.<
AAARRRGGGHHH!
Ok, frustration vented. Back to work.

Well, lucky you. All I get is error messages and it is driving me nuts.
Why oh why could I not just leave the stupid thing alone?
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it..."
Well, "fixing" it has it good and broke now for sure.
The stupid thing STILL does not show wine as being installed, it will not uninstall wine nor will it install wine no matter what I do.

The package is called wine1.2, but the installed version is 1.1.34. Don't ask me why, cause I don't know. 1.1.34 was just pushed out today, I have installed it, run winetricks and everything seems to be okay . . . just have to wait for the servers to come back up.
The packages site says that
wine1.2 == 1.1.31
, so you are most likely using the official wine repository.

Are you running "apt-get remove wine" or "apt-get remove wine1.2"?

It doesn't matter what I run, it says wine is not installed.
But it won't install it either.
I am getting the exact same error as this person
Here.
And none of the suggested fixes, including the ones on the thread
linked
did anything at all. It's still not installing, and not showing it as installed.

Try running this:
sudo apt autoclean && sudo apt autoremove

KittyKat77
What exactly is that supposed to do?
I am more tech savvy than the average windows user, but I am far from a computer genius! ;-)

The first command will remove any cached packages and the second will remove any packages that are scheduled to be automatically removed (for example, if you install package A which depends on B and then remove A, B will not be removed until you run autoremove). These commands probably won't fix your problem, but they won't break anything either so it is worth a shot.

Well, it may have helped, because previously when trying to do the "build dependency" step of installing wine it would just say "Aborted" but now it is thinking about some stuff and downloading things. Better than "Aborted" but we'll see if anything comes of it!
Thanks so much!

OK I *think* I got wine installed, but it's still not showing correctly on the menu bar (black box instead of "Wine" glass) and it prompted me to run a gecko installer when I tried to type winecfg in the terminal.
Hmmm... :-O
