Phase Shift and You, Limiting Your DPS?

A lot of locks these days run with their imps, and when they do so, they often forget to turn off phase shift, meaning they miss all of the buffs cast before the imp enters combat and becomes targetable. I don't see stuff like that posted in the stickies (albeit I didn't look too hard), and I was wondering if it's because it's something so obvious, or if it is just a negligible change in dps.
Sorry if it's a stupid question!

Hmm, come to think of it, this really has no pertinent value at all on these forums. Click Phase Shift. Right click it, if you're fancy like that. Problem solved, whether it has an effect or not. Don't judge me, it's late! xD

it is good advice to turn phase shift off but it really doesn't matter much. thing is, a vast majority of buffs which actually affect damage output are dynamic buffs that occur during combat, the ones cast by group members before combat are mostly stats or regen based which so rarely become an issue.
probably more important is to turn off your imp's fire shield since he casts it liberally on whoever gets hit during combat taking GCDs away from his firebolt.
i suppose this might find a home in the FAQ somewhere but i'm not sure quite where...

Turning off phase shift is a no brainer, but this tidbit is not intuitive so I'll repeat it. Turn off the auto-cast of Fire Shield. Your imp will drop a ton of GCDs that would otherwise be used for firebolts. The damage gained from the fireshields will certainly be less than the firebolts you gain.
And don't worry about trying to manually cast it on tanks or something like that. Just don't worry about it. Turn off Fire Shield and forget about it. (A note in the Fire Shield comments says it doesn't stack with Thorns. If that's true, then even more reason to turn it off.)

When I play Destro I leave the imp off Phase shift, buffs like AI/Fort will help it's survivability as well as increase mana regen through replenishment. If you use the DG make sure it gets full raid buffs too. Might and Kings will help a bunch as well. So summon it before the buffs go out.

I would have to disagree (sorta); I agree in the sense that pre-fight buffs don't increase DPS, however pre-fight buffs can greatly increase survivability. Like HxCory said, the buffs I find to be most beneficial are Fort and Kings... Not much fun to have to hard summon him during beasts.
PS: Does anyone stand behind me when I say that ALL warlock pets seem to have a high mortality rate on beasts? I've gotten into the habit of dragging my imp to a corner and putting him on "stay" (so he doesn't stand in the fire when a snobold tosses one onto me), however he still seems to fail pretty hard at worms and even Icehowl =/

fair point. dead pet does no dps etc etc.
i've never had much trouble with pet death on beasts. on gormok i tend to start like:
me X pet
where x is my teleport circle and my pet is on 'stay' off to the side. means you've always got somewhere to go and you pet never gets stuck in your fires.
never had an issue on worms. if you're with a tank you know you'll get a feel for where they'll kite the moving boss, just make sure your pet doesn't stand still to firebolt in that path. if you're in a pug you've just got to be a bit more careful.
i don't think i do any particular with the pet for icehowl and never had a problem there.

iirc pets get the same buffs as the class type in your raid group. For me, my FG gets every single buff a warrior gets automatically. Which is a relief, because I hate having to ask for "BoM and Kings on pet plox" on every damn pull.
I'm pretty sure the same applies to imps and ... mages i reckon? Can't speak out of personal experience, but I do believe they even get it while phase shifted. Please don't shoot me if I'm wrong ^^

Did you even read this thread? The whole point is that imps DO NOT get buffs if they are phased, and thus the suggestion to turn off auto-phasing.

I figured you were talking about direct buffs, not indirect buffs. Yeah, I know that sounds silly, but I consider pally buffs "indirect" buffs on my pet.
Anyway, seems I'm wrong, so never mind me :)

it isn't a bug. it's the nature of phase shift.
the whole idea is that your pet is untargetable and impervious to attacks but there's a drawback. he's unable to act and can't be buffed.
if you want him to attack during combat and you want him to get buffs then turn off phase shift.
simple.

the minion guide was written by kangi and, i agree, this would find a good home in that thread.

I'm trying to find the time to put more in-depth details into the guide, and this will be added as part of those additions. For right now, I'll add a little footnote advising to take it (and Fire Shield, as stated by asakawa) off of auto-cast.
