Simple question, if I level my
warrior
hunter (Doh!) as BM, would a dps pet like a cat or wolf be able to tank a quest elite? Or would I also need a bear or something for those moments?

You cannot level a warrior as BM!
But to answer your question, a cat or wolf would be fine to tank elite mobs.

Get a bear and level with him.
The dps is not that different at lower levels ,and with a bear is it soo much easyer to level.
-It holds better agro
-It holds agro on multiple mobs
-Good hp and armor
-Gets a lot of + heal from talent and from the healing major glyph
-Good dps! I would say at lower levles it is 90% compared to a fero pet...
-You can solo all the group3 and most of the group5 quests
Talent yourself with +hp instead of the hawk and get the extra armor talnet to max as well, give your pet all the hp and armor talents , charge and thunderclap ofc, and he tanks better than players all the way till 60 + (and have more hp lol :D sometime my bear had 1000+ health over me before outland)
IMHO there is no reason to level with a fero pet at all...
(got 80 with my hunter with a bear in 9day 14 hour playtime)
This is my leveling talent :

Pet :

The medpet glyphs asap you can, get spirit bond talent too!, it all ads up and your pet gets a 40+40+10 healing recived.. thats a LOT, this enables you to heal him through nearly anything. After your pet gets the silverback talnet he heals himself so much that you dont need to heal him at all against normal mobs or 2 or 3 :D
Dont get cobra talent for bear pet, get the collar, it adds to the thunderclap damage while cobra dose not.
Leveling is much more about staying alive than dps.
Btw I still toped all the dps charts in low level groups anyway.

I agree with everything else, but if this statement was true then everyone would level prot pallies and disc priests. Sure staying alive rocks, but if you take 3 times as long to kill stuff, the guy who had to run back to his body all those times will beat you to 80 everytime. I think it's a balance.

True True, but for a hunter, who kill a mob in 5 sec, even if he spend no talent points at all :D it is not a problem to put points in helpful talents instead of max dps talents during leveling.

True. Too much dps and you pull the mob down on you. While leveling and probably also while questing at lvl 80, you need to find a balance between keeping the mob on the pet (which means the pet has to live) and killing the mob (which is where you're dps comes in). Bestial wrath, Kill command, misdirection, intimidation and mend pet are your friends.

Quite possible ( in the lower levels of course ). I think I remember soloing
Kel'gash
a few levels below him, maybe 16 or 17, with my cat. DPS pets aren't actually meant to tank so I doubt they can tank
elites
. It's possible, but the level of how "elite" a mob is ( as mentioned ) varies.
So far, I'm having fun with my cat. There are times where I have trouble with it, but it's fine. I don't think I'll pick a bear or such tankers. If I can't solo something (lol), I'd prefer finding a tank class. A plus side about cats is that they look gorgeous. Still:
Ferocity = Speed killing
Tenacity = Defensive killing
Your choice.

I use an odd choice for a tanking pet, the never-mentioned crab.
The dps of my crab has never let me down, in fact I have found that it takes more time to down mobs with my dps pets than my crab.

DPS pet can tank many elites but it would fail on harder once, it missing 2 important tanking abilities and
thou helps a lot but it makes tanking with dps pet game of chance i seen it proc 5 times in row completely healing or non at all and pet die
There is breaking point of pet, and its usually some special ability like Enrage for example that can't be dispelled once elite mob starts using it pet usually die.
Newer the less i have killed most lvl 80 elite Group, and the once that patrol areas lvl 80 with like 130k hp.

for pet and you

also got those,
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=49633
,
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=49634
but usually ask around in zone for priest/pally/druid buffs
must disable all pet spells, and only leave on auto, and , if it looks like the pet can't handle that much damage and about to die, i pop and .
Also u can use trick, when pet fighting stand at max distance and be ready, upon pets death drop and begin then hit then , and lastly , when my geared was lower lvl, i could repeat that trick 3 times but kill the elite. Now better geared its possible without it.
Have fun Hunting

I'm guessing that once the 100% Resilience Pet buff goes live this will make it even easier to solo Elites, since Pets will be pretty much uncrittable with even a small amount of Resilience (Plus Pet Talents obviously)

Resilience doesn't work in PvE and how did you expect low lvl hunters to have more than 20 resil? ^^
Resilience still reduces crit chance, damage and drain attacks in PvE, plus there's a small amount of it on the Wintergrasp Heirloom items (which I'm currently using to level a Hunter with)
You're right though, it's not as if any regular lowbie Hunter will have much Resi at all. Then again there aren't any/many Elites left in Azeroth since the great easy evelling patch nerfed them all into normal status, so it's probably not even an issue.

I remember being so absolutely amazingly chuffed that I (as a Feral Druid) managed to solo the Bangalash elite quest. It honestly was a massive amount of work, and I felt rightly proud for managing to do it.
Once I got to Northrend I was soloing 3 Man Elite quests with astonishing ease. Even some of the 5 Man quests were trivial. Icecrown alone has more than a fair few, but they all fell under my boot quickly.
I guess it's a combination of extremely-easy-to-get item226 Emblem Gear and Class changes that make a mockery of any attempt at skilful play (the stupid instant cast heals/cyclones that we Feral Druids got that basically allow you to heal up to 100% HP at the tough of a button)
Warcraft takes skill. It takes it and throws it in the bin.
