nvidia cards have horrible pre-set heat management settings. You need to run an external program to monitor card temps and adjust the fan. For example, my nvidia geforce 8800gt will run at stock fan speed (29%) until it's core breaks 89 degrees Celsius (192 Fahrenheit). This will cause to overheat when under load since it won't ramp the fan up until it's too late. Simply installing riva tuner and setting up fan profiles was enough to keep it under 50c idle and under 90c full load.
As for your current error, try updating the drivers for the card. That sounds like a driver issue to me. Either that or your ATI card is overheating too.

If your card overheated with stock settings, then clearly it wasn't Nvidia's fault but rather you having a faulty graphics card.
I can assure you it's not normal operation for Nvidia graphics cards to overheat unless Rivatuner is installed.
And your assurance would be completely wrong. Ever since driver revision series 186, the nVidia control panel's 'auto-mode' is very slow to respond to changes in temperature caused by sudden load on the card. This is
especially
true of the original 8800GT series cards as they have poor heatsink design to begin with (they're essentially single width 8800GTS' running on the 9 series chipset), which I specifically mentioned in my post as an example. The 8800GT DOES have a stock fan speed of 29%, and it DOES stay there until the card gets seriously hot.
If you don't believe me, a simple google search for the terms "nvidia stock fan speed overheat" will provide more than enough evidence.
I will, however, concede that this is not nearly as big of an issue on the second generation 9 series cards (9600,9800, etc.) as they changed the stock fan speed to 41% iirc.
