Well, you can't be a resto in ele gear, nor you can be an ele in resto gear. Unless you're not thinking of raiding as such a hybrid, because every reasonable raid leader would kick you. Perhaps you plan on playing like I did (and probaby most of the people) before I got separate gear for this and that.
I wanted to be a healer. I've been dps for four years or so and got bored of it a bit. So whenever I wanted to go into a raid I was resto, if I was asked to dps instead, I still could, but I always replied it would suck compared to other people (and it did). Doing all kinds of quests, even group-quests for 3 players or so, was absolutely no problem using ele spec, and I still had the same gear for both jobs.
And I used 2 pieces of Conqueror's resto - riptide is a magnificent spell, not because of the lane HoT it does, but because of Tidal Waves. Also the Conqueror for elemental has +hit, which would be a total waste for resto spec. At the beginning none of my gear, aside from shoulders, had any +hit. That's why I wasn't a viable raid DPS, but again - solo quests, group quests, dailies and heroics? Piece of cake.
Later on my gear got more and more diversed and now I think I can perform at both roles fairly well even in raids.
On a side note: MP5 for a resto shaman is only an important stat as long, as you do not regenerate your mana through casting (
Tears,
the only meta you should ever use as a resto and of course
IWS which is pretty much obligatory). This kind of 'active' mana regeneration will benefit you far more if you get loads of haste, some serious critical chance (though never gem for it) and LOADS of intellect.
So:
haste > intellect >>>> mp5Unless your haste makes some spells go well under GCD, then intellect is far more valuable.
and I'm making this remark to point out, that if you gem for haste and intellect on your items, you will benefit from them greatly in both resto and ele. Of course for elemental still the best DPS increase is increasing hit, but then your gear will be useless in resto.
With one gear set you can be a jack of both of those trades, you can be even close to mastering one, but definitely can't master them both. No way.
