General marking order guidelines for instances and raids

I'm looking to start leading heroic instance runs and some raids. I've always had trouble determining marking order and usually leave it to someone else.
Could we possibly make a list of general guidelines or rules to proper and effective marking orders? I understand that many times there are situations and circumstances that pretty much generate their own obvious kill order, or it just doesn't matter.
Still it would be especially helpful for new party and raid leaders or tanks to have a good idea about what to kill first and so on.

For heroics you'll need to CC/kill order when your group is "low geared" or it doesn't have any group dinamic (Dinamic is when you're doing a guild run for example with people you ran heroics before and they're on top of their game). Basecly CC/kill order is just to make sure things won't get out of control if something bad happens, exemple: someone disconnects or your healer lags out, etc...
First the more information you can have about the instance the better.
I'll list some
BASIC
guidelines which means I won't be typing the word USUALLY all the time.
For a more specific and flawless guide I advise you to grab the mobs names and check their abilities, comments about them here on wowhead.
- About CC. It depends on the classes you have. For example. It is safe to give a mage the order to sheep a very important target that will most likely kill the group once he's out of the sheep than guiving the same target to your druid to root while he's healing the group or to a hunter that needs to chain trap with other 5 mobs running everywhere in between. So always think about what classes you have and if their CC is good for the pull or not.
- For example, In a pack If you have mobs with no mana and one mob with mana, this is your priority. Keep it CCed until the end or kill ir first. You can use roots for melee mobs but rooting a caster is pointless. That is why you need to read about mobs. Some buff others, some heal, some teleport, and stuff like that.
- If you're going to use fear-type CCs - pull the mobs way back to the previous room. I know the chances are low that a mob will run 20sec in a straight line to another pack but - yes, it happened before.
- Usually marks go from bottom to top. Skull is first to die, then X. The other marks are usually for CCs. If you assign a mage to sheep the blue square, for the rest of the run use the same simble. On the next pull once you put the blue box there - the mage will grab it and be ready (fingers crossed).
- When things get out of control - you can't do the same. Yealling or typing a lot of F words won't help. Think about the classes you have and the cooldowns they have. Healer is down. Maybe pop hero/bloodlust and burn the last mob? or a battle rez? or a hibrid class can switch to healing for a few seconds. A pally can pop lay on hands, a prinest can bomb fear everything or an warlock and so on.
- Heroics: read a lot. You can find prime information on Wowwiki and on wowhead. read a lot - all instances - all of them - if you find these comments "You'll need (insert class combo here) for this achivement" with +20 votes. This will help you when a group member goes all emo "zong! this ma last achivement! Let's do et!" when you know you don't have the group for that.
- Talk with everyone at the start of the group. If it is someone's first time - let the group know that and more important - make sure someone can/will explain the first and that this will take TIME so if anyone is in a hurry and is not planning to stick around for the whole run - they should speak up now - and you know... stuff like that; make sure everyone is on the same page before you kill a boss and get people saved.
The same "basic guidelines" go for raids.
Have fun.
