Steady Shot while leveling up?

My hunter finally ding'ed 50 and I got
steady shot
. I tried it for a bit but I guess I'm not seeing how it's such a radical change for hunters leveling up. It's not an instant attack and while casting it, you don't auto attack. It doesn't seem to be doing that much damage vs regular shots and other shots as well. What am I missing here?
The comments section for steady shot has such comments as:
"Very nice addition to leveling Hunters, as the class changes dramatically once this skill is introduced."
and
"I'm so glad that it is available at earlier levels. It makes it so much easier to solo, it reduces downtime due to better mana efficiency"
Perhaps this has to do with the Heirloom bow bug? Sometimes I find that depending on when I cast steady shot, I auto shoot while casting as well. This normal?

You do auto shot. It no longer clips auto like it did in Burning Crusade. The new question is whether you'll use the GCD and cast time on Steady above stings, arcane, etc.

I tried it out for a full level and it's actually pretty nice. Very mana efficient and does decent damage. Also I do see myself auto shooting during the cast time, so it doesn't stop or prevent my normal attacks. As BM it was nice to spam this after serpent sting. I switched to MM and now just use this and Aimed shot and it's working out great.
Now the question as MM while leveling up is if I should get the
Improved Steady Shot
talent or not. In my standard MM leveling build, there just aren't enough points for that talent.

When I was BM till I hit 60 Steady Shot was (and is) a dirt cheap shot that makes you spew out more damage. It's not as costly on your mana as Arcane Shot and Serpent Sting are yet it does a respectable amount of damage considering it costs you GCD's that you wouldn't otherwise be using while leveling.
Not to mention it's (imo) a signature (if bland) shot of our class. It's the filler that we all use to throw out more damage while pew pew-ing a boss.
