Humanity Should Reach for the Stars
Return to board index

I really don't think we should go to the stars. I mean, we screwed up Earth enough, let's not keep doing that; going from one world to the next just destroying it, using it up, and repeating.
I've always been of the opinion of Calvin and Hobbes: The only real proof of intelligent life in the universe is that it hasn't tried to contact us. Seriously, I could see that; Earth is a rotten husk, the terraform on the Moon and Mars the same, and we get eradicated by a blockade while trying to leaving our solar system.
Even though we've screwed Earth up, it's going to be necessary eventually for the survival of our species, even if we can manage to get Earth back on the right track. I know that to many people that might seem a petty excuse to go and tear up a new world, but I'd rather have the species survive and expand than be utterly destroyed in a relatively near future.

This is the most pathetic self loathing pity party I've ever read.

Heh thanks mytie lol. Still, that's my opinion of it, and as most of us won't live to that point anyways...

You really never know with the advancement of medical technology, especially in the areas of genetics. But that's a different topic entirely...

Just because you don't agree with something doesn't mean you need to make cynical remarks about it.

This is true and if you can't accept it it's your own fault.
Hope this helps.

Seriously though, 100% agree. I mean...doesn't it seem a bit strange that we were able to get to the moon with severely primitive computers compared to today, and yet today, we haven't sent a single person even there for a few decades now?
It's the cost. Before, it was a matter of national pride. Now, there's very little at stake, since someone's already been there, done that, so it's an economics exercise. If the US Government had the financial position back then that it's in now, with the same onus that it has now to try to be fiscally responsible, it'd never have gotten Apollo off the ground.

I think we should probably be talking about fixing the national debt, feeding ourself, prison overcrowding, abortion, government growth, constitutionality of the federal reserve, religions, environment, homosexuality, and any number of things that are worth our time.

He's married, isn't he? Not that it's mutually exclusive, probability dictates that he isn't likely to be.
