Your post reads as if when someone goes onto a English speaking forum, they should only expect to discuss American politics. Had Irinida posted "English speaking politics" or you said "most of the posters here live in the U.S." then I'd have no problem, but as it is...
Hmmm. My point was that, if one goes onto an English speaking forum, one should not be surprised to find that a political discussion might revolve around specific English speaking countries. There's a difference saying that one should expect to find only X, and that one should not be surprised to find X. I do not expect that I will be hit by a car when I cross the street (otherwise I would be unable to cross the street for fear of being hit by a car), but I should not be surprised by the possibility of a car hitting me when I cross the street (if one puts that thought out of his mind, he is liable to get hit by car should it come speeding down the road).

Again though, this has been pretty much a US discussion. As you are aware - the US is not the only English speaking country.
I think that was their point.

Makes sense - the name of the post has been changed. Still, I believe that it is strange that one would be surprised to find that a topic was about America in an English speaking forum - I know I wouldn't be surprised if I started reading a topic and it was about England (although I might be slightly surprised if it was about some obscure African country that had a majority of English speakers) - this is an English speaking forum, so topics about those countries might arise.

Everyone uses statistics that way, including the government, it's nothing new.
Which is why I never trust anything I read. Get the source and do the calculations yourself.
I know I don't usually approve of wikipedia, but
this
page will help you out a lot if you keep all of the points in mind when reading things.
Of course I didn't actually answer the question (per usual as some might say :P). What they say might not be an out-right lie, however the fact that they are using the logical/mathematical ignorance of the general population to their advantage should say something about them.
Wow, I have to say, paranoia alert. I trust stuff far more than you do

Now i know why mods are out for mytie neck
sorry for necro
It really started before this... long before this. I do something that most don't. I question them when I think they are out of line. They don't like that.
The thing is, I work very hard to make sure I don't break rules. I'm not perfect, but I do stay within my bounds fairly well. So, the mods may dislike me intensely, but I give them no excuse to ban me. This thread illustrates that beautifully.

bd - "UR wrong iM rite. QED"
Like I said, do the research yourself, it's not that hard. If you want to follow people who are continually proven to be deceptive go right ahead...just don't think that makes you better than the people who know better.

Yeah this is pretty old. I ended up using this as a jumping point for a research paper, basically from all the !@#$ I read, almost everything bends statistics to make themselves look good. The main problem though, is that large parts of various populations don't really care about reality, as long as they can continue believing what they hear. Sort of becomes a cycle of putting out crap => accepting crap => putting out bigger crap. Like, when it came down to actually make decisions in the White House, the last administration sort of just had to blindly make decisions since all the information they had was unreliable bull!@#$. (although nothing has really changed so there's the possibly Obama is dealing with the same &*!@). I mean, the administration had been turning out bull&*!@ like
Worldwide terrorism dropped by 45 percent between 2001 and 2003.
and then you have people like Donald Rumsfeld saying around the same time
We lack metrics to know if we are winning or losing the global war on terror
Yet, the American people were swallowing up the whole "yay we're winning the war on terror" crap.

Another stat which I'm sure a lot of people are going to get all anal about...
Abortion stats.
Do you know who supplies the raw numbers? Planned Parenthood, the abortion clinics themselves, etc. It's a completely biased source for 'factual' statistics.

You know, I have to ask hyperspacerebel, why are you so skeptical of everything EXCEPT YOUR OWN BELIEFS?
Basically, you're just being a hypocrite if you question everything except for the things you want to believe (which makes you really no better than the rest of the ignorant masses).
Hate to be confrontation, but you coming here and acting like you're a skeptic when you're adamant about your faith... its just ridiculous.

Faith =/= facts.
And haven't I told you my story already?

Faith =/= facts.
Exactly my point. You're a hypocrite. You should have the same about of skepticism when some guy in a robe tells you something as you have when a government organization tells you something. Sadly, you don't. You trust the guy in the robe because your parents told you to, and you haven't built up the confidence to question them yet. Its ok, you'll get there.

Faith =/= facts. I believe what the Church teaches because it is my faith. What the government teaches is fact (or is supposed to be), which can be proven or disproved.

I didn't do anything my parents told me to do growing up. Rebel is in my name for a reason.

Been there done that. I spent most of my adult life as an agnostic. I questioned all religion.

So you're saying, because you don't have enough evidence to reasonably reject what your Church claims based on your standards of evidence, you should believe what they say? Wow, you're bright.
There's plenty of instances when the government might put out a report like, as I said, they claim so and so has improved by X. If they don't have enough evidence to prove it, that doesn't mean I should believe what they say one way or the other. The most I can say is that I am uncertain about that position.
The Church has very little evidence to back up their claims. As most, you should be uncertain about your beliefs if you're as skeptical as you say. "Faith" is bull!@#$ that is made up to convince you its acceptable not to provide evidence of something.
Basically, you were told that it is ok to be hypocritical, and you haven't questioned that yet. Hopefully, you'll get over that.
