Voidy got hit with the nerf bat, and he got hit HARD. His bonus stamina that he gets from his master was reduced from 100% to 60%. In other words, while my Voidwalker pre-3.1 would have 28k HP, he now only has 18k HP (Less than I do!). My Felhunter has nearly as much HP as he does.
On account of the sacrifice changes, he is now the premiere 2s arena pet for Double DPS teams, however with his loss of stamina he is now a squishy little bugger easily squashed by enemy melee. Sacrifice is Godly, even if you are just popping it quickly and then Fel-Dom'ing a Felhunter out.

As for tanking elites - you choosed wrong one. Darmuk is objective of a one man quest in which you kill him with special minion (so his stats are really diferent than any other elite). I can't say how much better blueberry tanks, but when I leveled up with SL/FG build, my FG had no big problems soloing 100k+ hp elites from group quests in Icecrown.
I think the only reason of taking VW instead of FG is for really big pulls due to his aoe-taunt (with stupid long CD), so you have enough time to Seed them up before they all come for you (and shield if you didn't manage to kill them all in that chain detonation).

the voidwalker was
main
tanking the single hardest encounter in the game after wrath's launch. he cearly needed a nerf.
however he can still easily do what we need him to be able to do.

we were seeing warlocks with the right gear get their VW's over 80k health. i saw screenshots of HP levels up near 100k though i think 86 was as high as i saw it in game.

not at all.
it required the warlock to equip their pvp gear for the most part and seek out a few particularly good stamina pieces.
the healing was far easier since the voidwalker took a fraction of the damage of a player from sarth's breath attack (the thing that one-shotted incredibly well geared player tanks). extra throughput was required but far less coordination of defensive/protective cooldowns.
it was clearly the easiest way for many(/most) guilds to complete the encounter at that tier level and was entirely practical. the guilds that the encounter was aimed at were the guilds who had just been doing full raid stacking in sunwell (resto shamans for the win!). guilds used to equipping entire raids in the correct resistance gear. the idea of asking one lock to get his PvP gear and making sure he got a couple of tanking trinkets was laughably easy and (from blizzard's PoV) cheapened the achievement.

soloing an easy elite isn't quite what we're talking about. that is exactly what the VW is intended to do.

that was exactly the point. his TPS was dreadful but on sarth the whole raid ignored him for most of the fight while they dealt with the drakes
