A lot of people say shatter should be 100%, so...

i thought making ice shards a 2 talent point to increase crit damage by 33/66% and increasing the crit chance on shatter to 100% (so you'd need about 12% crit to safely cap it).
what do you think of this? it lowers our burst potential, but increases our consistency and DPS.
shatter currently weights at a 1, while the new shatter weights at about a 1.43, which i think is fair considering our potential burst was lowered (if both crit, it's crazy).
So, if we assume we're just doing a pseudoshatter (FB+IL) then with a 3.5K FB and a 1.7K IL, your expected damage is 7956 with current shatter (assuming 15% chance to crit and 12% resil), and 8632 with the new shatter.

it's not a significant nerf, you hit harder more consistently, just that the 20% of the time that you would hit harder, you wouldn't in this case. Changed the numbers slightly, the current shatter expected damage was about 156 less than it should have been.

well in that case i suppose it turns into whether or not you think mages are in need of a buff; being a mage, i try to be as unbiased as possible, but i do agree our damage is slightly lacking (even though this is a damage buff).

nerfing dmg is only going to do nothing but make that healer your fighting more annoyed at you.
except it's a damage buff, not a nerf.

If reducing ice shard's crit dmg bonus to 66% down from 100% is considered a buff to you .. God i do not want to know what you consider a nerf.
and shatter is guaranteed to crit. that's a buff to burst, i gave you the numbers in the opening post.
If we use the old shatter numbers and assume 3.5K frostbolts and 1.7K ILs, then a FB+IL shatter goes off for 676 more damage every time, as opposed to doing 1768 more once every 5 shatters and doing less every other time.
Look at the numbers, you do more damage if you make the change i suggested, not less.
Please, use your head before you critique it, posts like delt's and arcerian's are helpful posts that considered my point and disagreed, you simply didn't read what i said or looked at the numbers.
If we made shatter a 100% chance without changing ice shards, the damage output would do over 2000 more damage, which is a monstrous buff and quite frankly, a little overpowered IMO. i doubt other classes would consider that to be fair.

read your post. Dropping overall crit damage and buffing shatter to 100% chance to crit does not change the fact that when you do crit, 100% of the time, you will only deal 66% of crit dmg bonus. 100% of the time assuming frostnova/elemantal/ff and frostbite is up only. All other attacks when not frozen will bonus at only 66% Using the original shatter ... you will crit 18% crit (from gear) + 50% (from shatter) +3%,+8% if stacked (from Winter's chill) thats 76% of the time (assuming frostnova,elemernal/ff is up) but when you do crit you will crit for 100% additional crit damage and you will have 100% crit bonus when they are not frozen.
This is a nerf since you can only rely on frostnova / ff / frostbite / elemental to perform your shatter combo and your giving up 66% crit damage so you can have an additional 25ish% change to crit.
66% is alot. ALOT of damage. Frost will literally be like throwing snowballs at the enemy.
So bottem line. We need to buff shatter without suffering from a significant nerf.
the crit chance isn't nearly as high as you're saying it is. most mages will have, at most, 14% chance to crit from gear. Resilience nearly negates this and puts the chance to crit at about 2.5% bonus. With full winter's chill, that's another 5%, which makes it 57% chance to crit, which will very slightly increase your chance to crit with both.
That actually makes the expected damage with the same FB/IL to be 8164, which is still less.
How about this, ice shards is 40/80, that will increase the new shatter's burst to nearly the same potential as the current one and make it consistent.

i guess, i mean, i'd love to see 100% chance and 100% bonus, but i think the other classes would definitely think that's OP. also, do you mean 100% crit chance, or do you mean guaranteed crit? because they could still get you under 100% with enough resil and considering how we dont' get too much crit.

well i'd prefer consistency over potentia damage.

I'd prefer consistently high burst damage.
