I too started playing my first toon after WOTLK. A priest to be exact.
Alot can be said about the improvment of disc's raid support througout the WOTLK expansion.
I don't know about you, but ever since soulwarding was put in place, I have been able to support the group much more quickly and effeciently.
I can't really say that disc can group heal effectively nor should it (atleast not at this point) because it just wouldn't be possible, well for most runs anyway; especially in the harder raids like TOC-25man
If blizzardf would ever want to make Disc viable for raid healing (which i highly doubt) then they would have to create some sort of Power Word: Barrier.
Though this won't happen, one can still dream.

*Ahem*
Anyways, I really wish I could have played back in the Pre-BC times. Sounds like a lot of fun, compared to now, where you can go one night in Ulduar and get like 10 epics for yourself.
I really think Blizzard should make a separate server, dedicated to patch 1.xx, but with bug fixes and the like. I'd definitely play it.

I started my priest in 2007. Back then how many have stated Spriest were our mana batteries. I was a hybrid of disc/holy for the IDS (yes the divine spirit... not only did the extra points in "improve" give u spirit like the current counterpart, but it also gave a % of ur total spirit as spellpwr). That was the "beginning" spec for any off-healer priests before we got geared in kara, then we all went CoH spec for SSC and so on.
CoH was fun. With ur raid frames and a mouse over key macro you could easily heal all 5 parties just by hovering over one person. It was not a smart heal and our over healing was a lil high because of it. People always wanted at least 3 CoH priests for BT and sunwell.
We were never main tank healers or at least no one wanted us to be. Usually we were off tank healers or raid. Disc was a pvp spec in TBC and was never seen in raids, none that I saw at least. Pallies were the king and Druids followed right behind for being best MT healers.
We down ranked, and we loved it. GH rank 4 was enough to keep ppl alive back then. MP5 was sweet and I rarely went oom as long as I was smart. We could also chain mana pots as well. Just the reg cd no "out of combat" nonsense.
Not to mentioned Tailoring was the best thing for a priest just starting raiding bc the PMC set was for tailors (moon cloth) tailors only and was equivalent to t5 gear.
This was also a time when there was such a thing as a healing item and spell pwr item.. it would say "404 healing power and 202 spell damage".. if it was ment for a dps caster it would just say 202 spell dmg and 202 healing power. So we never had to compete with dps classes for gear. (I do miss those days!)
By the start of wotlk, we did have our smart heal, other healing classes QQed forever to nerf us. And we did get nerfed i think in 3.0, thats when I went disc and had to argue with everyone that disc was no longer a pvp only talent tree, talenting correctly made you a very powerful and mana efficient tank healer. I was giving pallies a run for their money and NEVER going oom. Then they qqed about Rapture, and well we got nerfed again. Now rapture is a sad excuse of a talent compared to what it was.
Now I roll a pally, had enough of all the priests nerfs blizzard has done bc of how powerful they seemed in arena or pvp to balance us. Sad to say, my pally when it just turned 80 had more mana and bigger flash heals then my disc priest in T7.5 gear and could out heal most raid healers when i was still in blues. Yes pallies are nice, but don't nerf them, how bout a nice buff back to the priest class. I think we deserve that.

anyone know how you get the old talent tree, i know someone posted it on another post who was a good webpage in another forum on wowhead, shamefully i must tell you i forgot to bookmark it.
got into wowvault(then doing a google search), but it seems messy and quiet sure it was not same site. This site i saw linked was really well structured and had all tree until patch 2.4 in wow history.
If anyone know what i mean, please post it:)

At one point in the game, all the different races of the priest class had their own racial spell. For Dwarves I believe it was Fear Ward, Night Elves was Starshards, Humans was Feedback, Undead had Devouring Plague and Trolls had Shadowguard.
Fear Ward was eventually removed from just Dwarves and given to all the priests. They replaced it at some point, maybe with the instant heal...? Im not sure... but they did give Humans and Dwarves something to compensate for it.
They had what now is our 10th talent Holy spell: Desperate Prayer.
And Night Elves had Elune's Grace, a +20% dodge spell. Adding Draenei and BE there, they had Symbol of Hope and Consume Magic, respectively.
Editing for my story.
I mostly PvP, thus the changes on each patch affect me greatly.
In the first WotLK season, S5, Priests were down, down, down. Shadow was way too shquishy with too few resilience around. Discipline was the easiest to OOM. The utter dominance of Paladin Holy/ Death Knight as a direct counter to us (Winning the mana battle with Paladins back then was nearly impossible, mana burn was far from enough), made us struggle. And priests NEED gear to survive well in PvP.
Patch 3.1 brough us renewed hope (^^'). Gear was getting better, our mana was more stable, and we could get along. Also, Priest/Rogue could easily top ratings on 2s. PriestMageRogue is good as always has been. We had a few viable combos, tough priest/rogue, priest/DK and priest/Ret where the competitive ones; rest was viable, certainly, just not as good. Shadow, unfortunately, as it sets offensive through dots, although it is a blast on BGs, it is very hard (and gear dependant) to settle in an arena team. Cleave teams dominated 3v3, and were a near direct counter to RMP, and relatively easy to play; we struggled a little more than before, but still manage. (And may I add, the improvements in gear made me /lol at Death Knights, the super-class pre-3.1 on par with Retribution Paladins. Abolishing diseases, dispelling Chains, Dotting, shielding and laughing. Shacling their stupid Lichborne, Fearing after that, we had a counter to essentially everything they could cast on us but Anti-Magic Shell.)
Patch 3.2, the seventh season, introduced the "2v2 ratings being unable to give tier2 season weapons and shoulders" thingy. We still rock with the same combos on 2v2, but now, 3v3 seems the real thing. Bleastcleave is born, and dominant, and utterly overpowered. RMPs rarely hold against an un-CCable team, and they're able to destroy your priest in 3-4 GCDs, maybe 5 if you PS/PW:S/Renew before. There's going to be a nerf, but this team will still be around and shooting for overcoming RMP as -the- 3v3 team for the season. Shadow's getting better, but still slightly unable to hold post a couple of cooldowns, and higly vulnerable to dispels.

Honestly, I kinda miss using "Consume Magic' on my Belf priest...people would ask why I had to keep rebuffing and I had to explain I was eating my buffs.
Belf magic addiction ftw :)
