The Lich King was originally created by Kil'Jaeden to weaken the forces of Azeroth before the next invasion by the Burning Legion. The Lich King broke free of his captors and thus the control of Kil'Jaeden.
So why does he continue to pursue his original mission of destroying all life on Azeroth?

Because he's evil.

Right. He's not the most complicated of antagonists.

More accurate answer would be...
Kil'Jaeden is the typical "recreate it all the way I see fit" and since Artie is warped now, and they're both technically one entity, he's happy to follow suit.

World of Warcraft doesn't really tread these deep waters.
I mean, bosses are plainly "bad guys" and their motives stem are simply that - to do bad things.
Other than the ambiguity over the moral dichotomy presented by the juxtaposition of the Horde and the Alliance, there are few grey zones.

Killing Illidan and Kael'thas made me sad, neither of them were as bad as everyone painted them out to be (well, pre-Sunwell Keal)...

Generally speaking it's because the really big nasties in warcraft are either insane or more like cosmic evils. You want ambiguity you look away from the extremely powerful enemies (VC for example) Or as was mentioned, Horde/Alliance.

Can't believe this hasn't been brought up yet, but what is one to do after one breaks free of one's masters? You build a big army of mindless servants to make sure that if they come back to destroy/re-enslave you, you can kick their butts.
If you think of it that way, the Lich King isn't really destroying Azeroth so much as 'enlisting' it.

The Lich King is the combined entity of Ner'zul and Arthas. Ner'zul was easily corrupted by Kil'jaeden and remained that way. Ner'zul used Frostmourne and Kel'Thuzad to corrupt Arthas so that he could have a new body and be free of Kil'jaeden's grip. Now the Lich King wants to destroy all life on Azeroth and have the undead scourge be all.
Actually.... not completely true: Ner'zhul was the first Draenor Orc to fall for the Legion trick, but he figured it out and tried to stop it. He was the one who told the Frostwolves not to take the Blood Curse, and after the 2nd war he set it up so that the orc's of Draenor could flee from the Legion.... or so he thought. The Portal's destroyed Draenor, and Ner'zhul was captured by Kil'jaeden who then tore his phyiscal form apart and placed his soul into the Armour of the Lich King. He did as the Demon commanded him, which was start to conqueror the world, as if he did it, he would regain his body again.
Then of course the madness set's in and he realized that if he broke free of the Legion and took Arthas's body he would have both of the things he wanted.... which didn't work out that way.

One can't help but wonder if we are truly doing the right thing or just getting in the way of evolution's natural call. While an interesting thought, in regards to evolution, we're right in fighting the Scourge. :P If we win then we aren't fighting evolution... :P

Well they were trying to get to another planet, but between Draenor exploding and Kil'jaeden watching for portals off the doomed planet... he and his didn't stand a chance. And I love that all the Warlock's with him were transformed into the first wave of Lichs.
