Hey, seeing as it's your first run it sounds like, I'll go through it.
When starting the event, you have the option to talk to two people. There is Brann, who is standing towards the ramp to the left when you walk in. And there is the Giant blue sentry (Forgot his name). When you talk to Brann, It's basically easy mode, all the towers are automatically disabled, and Flame Leviathan will be at his easiest setting. If you talk to the sentry, he will activate the towers, and you must go through and destroy them. The only reason for doing this is to attempt hard modes for badges and loot, the ones you don't kill will be added onto the Flame Leviathans powers.
Now unless your talking about the little towers, the ones that just spawn adds, no, it's not necessary to kill them all, but you usally end up doing it anyways, as each goes down in about 10 seconds from two people.
All the extra adds will stay where they are when you engage the boss, unless of course you turn around and shoot them, I however haven't tried this.
Also, as a side note, some people think that if you get naked to use the vehicles (So you don't suffer from durability if you die) is a good choice, this however weakens your vehicles. They scale with your Item levels, so for ease, just wear your best gear possible in every slot.

Assuming you talk to Brann Bronzebeard and
not
the Lore Keeper of Norgannon to start the event, then you can simply blaze a straight path from the start to Leviathan without needing to take out any towers. Just in case you didn't know.
I'm not certain if you can make it through without aggroing everything on the middle pathway, but don't let that stop you from trying. Stick to the left as much as possible, only destroy storm beacons that are visibly popping out dwarves, and only destroy mobs that are clearly aggroed onto one of you and you might save yourself time.
Mind that you may aggro the giant spider tanks on the ledges as you go. Someone always aggroes the bastards somehow when we run straight through, so it's best to take them out from a distance and then continue.

I recommend you try with 1 tower up at least. It changes from 1 emblem of valor to 2 emblems of conquest, and the added difficulty is not very noticable. Leave thorim tower up (most annoying of the 4 towers to kill, its the top left one) and all you need to do is avoid the lighting circles that appear on the ground (super easy) during the fight.

We actually leave two towers up, Hodir and Mimiron. It just takes us awhile for a few reasons, the biggest one being that some of our raiders don't do vehicles and have to readjust to using them each week.
Mimiron/Thorim is by far easiere then Mimiron/Hodir imo.
Mimiron/Thorim/Hodir is somewhat hard until you get it trained. All four towers is just insane and alot of fun :)

Mimiron is a painful tower to leave up. Flame Vents become something that actually need interrupting.
