does it really matter that the caster hit for 10k, if the melee hit five times for 2k each in the same time period?
Looks balanced to me...your problem is...?
Look at cc. What's the cast time for most Ranged cc vs Melee cc? Melee is instant in almost every case. Ranged cc mostly has a cast-time. Is this fair?
ranged instacast CC: Dragon's Breath, Deep Freeze, Freezing Arrow, Wyvern Sting, Scatter Shot, Psychic Scream,
Shadowfury, Death Coil, Howl of Terror (talented)...and those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.
Can somebody count the melee abilities over 5 yards? I'll bet there are over twenty. What does it mean when the warrior actually wants a large range, so he can zoom in and have another free stun? Is that toon really melee or is he ranged?
So you want ranged to have insta-casts, and melee to have no way to catch up...explain to me how a warrior/paladin/DK/whatever is supposed to fight a mage who engages his from 30 yrds away?

If they hit as hard as casters, why do melee (mostly) get bonus health/armor? Because they need to get closer to their enemies to do damage, while ranged can stay at a safer distance.

Ranged has time to cast, seeing their enemy closing in. Melee needs to get their cc on instantly, or their target might run away. Note that the close-range cc of the ranged classes is also instant.
2) Can somebody count the melee abilities over 5 yards? I'll bet there are over twenty. What does it mean when the warrior actually wants a large range, so he can zoom in and have another free stun? Is that toon really melee or is he ranged? If they are actually ranged toons, shouldn't they have their plate-licenses revoked? And what about the short-ranged ranged abilities? What about the heals / tanky abilities on dps classes?
All the classes are somewhat hybrid.
I see many of the comments agreeing that melee classes can pwn range in almost every case. Sure, there are exceptions. Blizz has given mages a very nice set of tricks to escape danger (note the insta-cast nature of these tools) and warlocks were considered op when fear worked reliably. But most agree that their melee toons need never be afraid of a one-on-one with a ranged toon. What does that tell you Blizz? That they've got some imbalance. See Warhammer for the other way around.

Two other problems Blizz has is 1) that Melee abilities are virtually all instant cast (gcd only), while Ranged damage abilities mostly have cast times and 2) Melee has too many ranged abilities.
1) The argument is that a caster can hit hard. But look in your combat log, does it really matter that the caster hit for 10k, if the melee hit five times for 2k each in the same time period? Have we balanced squishiness/power vs durability/lesser power? Would you rather take 3-6 seconds waving a big cast-bar in front of the melee or hit like a machine gun anytime you want, like melee does? The melee weapon may say 3.5 second cast, but the combat log shows the lie. Four instant hits with this little spell and that little spell in addition to the melee strike is still five hits. Most melee insta-cast at least four damaging abilities simultaneously. If they hit as hard as casters, why do melee (mostly) get bonus health/armor?

YOu sir talk about something you don't even know about.
1. There are plenty of ranged instant casts.
2. Yes their are melee abilites that go over 5 yards but not as many as you might think.
Warriors have thier charge which puts you in that 5 yards and a gun wow a gun
Rogue Same
Pally oh they use the light they have a few spells that they can cast to make it farther
DKs; Few long range ablities IT and DG is really the only ones you don't spec into.
Feral Druids well charge and Fairy Fire
Enh Shamies They are shammies nuff said
A few points on my end. You cast that 10k attack from far away in most cases out of agrro range so you get a few 10k hit right off. then 1 while closing in. thats 20k in the time it takes 1 melee to get in melee range unless we have a closing ability
And one of the bigest points WHY DO I SEE when on the damage metter
Mage
mage
lock
boomkin
rogue
DK
Pally
Explain how they arn't geting the balance if anything i CAN turn it around and say they need longer cast times.
