so the other night i was a complete idiot and thought the price of the kirin tor ring (~8000g) was actually the price of the inscribed version (~1000g). not noticing the fact that i was out half my gold i equipped the ring and logged.
the next day i logged in and was shocked to see i was out a ton of g. so after 15min of trying to figure out what happened i checked wowhead and discovered my mistake. i figured i was screwed but thought what the hell ill give it a shot, so i opened a gm ticket. an hour or so later the gm opens a chat window and sure enough mails me back the g (actually more than what i paid since i had the revered discount from kirin tor). i expected they'd just remove the ring from me right then and there but i still had it so i thought i had lucked out and stashed it in my bank. the next day it was gone :( so my question, i suppose, is this how it always works when you have an item refunded in this way? bliz just randomly deletes it from your possession at some random time?
obviously i get that abusing stuff like this is a quick way to get banned. i am just curious.

ok, thanks.
oh, the gm didn't assume; i laid out the whole story in the ticket.
honestly i was surprised the gm didn't just tell me tough luck.
edit: forgot to mention in the original post - cool thing was i kept the achievement :)

Most GMs are nice enough to refund you. I have had a couple cases of "buyer's remorse" and "oops, why did I click that one". Despite the long ticket times, they get back to you and agree to refund what you paid. Gold, tokens, etc. I'm sure they don't have to.
Of course, make sure you still have the item in your bags or bank. :)

Yeah That crap happened to me back in BC when the Isle of Quel' Danas came out, I went there to buy the
Vanir's Left Fist of Savagery
and by some weird circus accident i ended up buying the
Vanir's Left Fist of Brutality
I was kinda peeved but they went ahead and took care of it for me and told me it was only able to be done a minimum amount of times. but all in all it took them about 4 hours to change it.

i have to admit though the gm i spoke with sounded almost automated. are they just following a script?

I'm sure you've noticed this by now, but the inscribed ring doesn't just cost 1k gold, as you have to have the previous ring to upgrade.

Once a GM removes an item from your inventory it is gone server side but it takes a re-log to remove it client side.
