Then we'll have to agree to disagree in this instance.
It's also worth noting that there is nothing in the article suggesting that the kid knew he was being videotaped, or that it was revealed to him. The suicide and the webcam behaviour could be two completely unrelated acts.

And of course, the mohel won't be charged with anything because it's a religious ritual. Despite my usually tolerant attitude, I think this practise should be outlawed because it's horrifying on so many levels.
At the very least, you should probably have to prove you don't have the Herps before you do that.

I don't think freedom of religion > protecting people (and sometimes animals) under the US law. There have been a number of cases where parents whose religion didn't allow them to take kids to the doctor were convicted on criminal charges when their kids died. In cases where someone has died undergoing an exorcism, the fact that it's part of the religion was not a viable defense against manslaughter charges. People who practice Santeria are allowed to sacrifice animals, but if the conditions that they are keeping them in before that aren't humane, they can still be charged with animal cruelty. If they can prove he knew he has herpes, he's criminally liable regardless of whether or not he has the right to perform the circumcision based on freedom of religion. If they can prove he didn't get regular health checks before performing these circumcisions, they might still be able to get him for criminal negligence.

Another baby has died of herpes
after having a
metzizah b’peh
circumcision performed.
A description follows, some users may find it distressing.
Because some of my readers may not be aware of the ritual, known as metzizah b’peh, I will describe it. Following the “usual” steps involved in a circumcision (i.e., stroking the baby’s penis to make it erect, stripping the foreskin from the head of the penis, and cutting the foreskin off), in metzizah b’peh the mohel (ritual circumciser) then “removes blood from the wound with his mouth” (this is the news media’s description; in other words, the mohel sucks the baby’s bloody penis). In this case, the mohel passed on his herpes simplex virus type 1 to the baby through the penis wound, resulting in its death.
And of course, the mohel won't be charged with anything because it's a religious ritual. Despite my usually tolerant attitude, I think this practise should be outlawed because it's horrifying on so many levels.
That sounds like pedophilia and statutory on
so
many levels. Why is this legal?

The New York city health department tried to have it banned a few years back when something exactly like this happened before, but Michael Bloomberg stopped them because it was an election year and going along with it may have harmed his chances.
Naturally. Election results are so much more important than people's lives, don'tcha know?

After three or four attempts, I have decided that there is no way to respond to the last line of Boron's statement in a civil manner, so I'll just drop it. I'm not wasting energy with people who repeatedly make statements about multiple topics that have no relation to facts.
But about the original article, I agree that this practice needs to be outlawed. It's socially acceptable child abuse. The physical act alone, without taking into accounts health risks, is sexual assault of a child.

Sucking... the bloody penis... of a child...
What the hell?
I don't mind religion, but that sh*t needs to get outlawed instantly.

@ Doctor- I think their actions were just as ridiculous. But it doesn't mean that a blanket passive aggressive statement about everyone who has any dispute with Jewish people being labeled Hitler is correct or appropriate.

@Sinespe- I think that the charges as they stand, if he's convicted and gets the full 10 years, are adequate. It was a horrible thing to do, and while he couldn't have predicted that suicide was going to be the outcome, he was most assuredly specifically aiming to humiliate and degrade him. I think that 10 years would be a fair sentence, based on all aspects of the case.

I know, I hate when people do that too. It's like when you're cooking, and you turn the oil up too high, and it sputters and burns your arm. It totally sucks like that.

I don't think it's a reasonable consequence that someone dies after they're videoed having sex.I'd agree...if the video in question wasn't passed around the internet and the person making the video actually tweeted people when to log in to watch the act......
It is not reasonable to kill yourself if people see you having sex on the internet. The LOGICAL conclusion there isn't to end your life. Therefore, it isn't a foreseeable consequence.
