I was always curious how exactly oscar winners are chosen.
This article
does a pretty good job giving a behind the scenes look. I dislike how the person went about deciding who to vote for. It wasn't always focused on the movie/character, but sometimes on the politics of it.

just because it is not right to demand someone get fired for having differing views from me
Is it permissible to inform a company that you will not purchase their product until they alter it to suit your specifications?
No.
Is is permissible to stage protests outside of abortion clinics?
Either way, I'm going to reference this discussion when the participators soap box later about "tolerance" in other discussions.
I believe that Card has a right to healthcare, to food, to clothing, to housing, to a stipend in the case of unemployment, the right to express his views without consequence from government employees, to travel, to own property, to practice his religion (where doing so does not contravene the laws of the country he is residing in), to protest, to boycott, to vote and to choose where he works, should the employer wish to employ him. I believe that no matter what Card does, he has a right to life, including provision for food, healthcare and clothing. I also believe that no matter what he does, some attempt should be made to accommodate for his religious beliefs.

That's nice. Those are positive sentiments.

Last wild Swiss bear
shot
by authorities for being a danger to humans.
It's sad, to be sure, but this little tid bit from the news article made my eye twitch:His death is the result of a lack of acceptance of bears in Poschiavo, which is a direct consequence of a lack of information among the populationresult of a lack of acceptancelack of acceptanceI suppose we all need to attend bear sensitivity training, and cultural tolerance classes, so our population will better understand and accept bears.
I'm sorry, but that's so friggin dumb. If a bear was hanging out around my kid's school, and stalked humans during the day, I don't need to learn to be more accepting to him. Screw that. He needs to move, or be shot, or put in a zoo, or SOMETHING. The very last thing on my list, so far down that it shouldn't be even THOUGHT of, is bear acceptance education. Pffffttt.

It's sad that there wasn't enough land set aside to keep him out of contact with developed areas. Beyond that it's sad that he couldn't be darted and sent to a zoo. But if a bear has learned that there is food in human areas, and shows no fear of people, then it's a recipe for disaster. We do the same thing in the US- if a bear becomes a problem animal and starts foraging in human areas, he's removed or put down. It's not safe to have an animal like that roaming neighborhoods.

Article about Coy Mathis
.
So this is probably a very specific question at Milayu, but open to thoughts from others as well - how does an 18 month old 'express herself as a girl'?
Psychologically, you don't have theory of mind at that age, you don't have a conscious sense of 'self', you can't look in a mirror and say 'hey, that's me!' - instead, you see another person over there. So I don't understand how any sense of 'self' as a female could have been either expressed by the child, let alone any sense of gender at all, unless it was imposed by the parents.

I'm not sure the theory of mind comes into it to a great degree. While to an extent that's when a child can
recognise
gender differentiation, very young children already display gender differentiation in which toys they prefer to play with, so an observer may already note a discrepancy between sex and gendered behaviour. Of course, that's a dangerous petard to place, since it limits the extent to which gender can be seen as a social construction rather than something innate. At any rate, Jones, Wheelright et al. found that female to male transsexuals had more autistic traits, so it may be possible to feel uncomfortable as a certain gender without fully understanding the subjective state of another person.
I mean, I don't disagree that parents will impart a huge degree of their own preconceptions into the child's identity (Judith Harris might though). Life will be tough for that kid no matter what. The world just doesn't seem to be made for some people. Actually, this case will be super useful as an example for my group investigation into personhood. Thanks for posting!

Turkish Muslims pissed off at a Lego's Star Wars model. So
crazy
. As if we are teaching our kids to hate Muslims one lego at a time.
I need to go find some excuse to be outraged so I can have an excuse to portray myself as a victim.

A child was
suspended
from school for having a piece of paper with the corner torn off, that school officials say resembled a paper gun.
In a related story, the entire state of
Idaho
was banned, because it resembled the paper gun.

US Federal gov
spends 1.5 million
to figure out why lesbians are... more often obese... than hetero women. I heard Rush today mention that he thinks it is because of shallow men. Shallow men demand skinny women, so women trying to appeal to men will try to be skinny, but there are fewer shallow women, so women trying to appeal to women will try less to be skinny. I don't know what the reasons are...

Trollfucious saw this article, and wondered why 1.5 million dollars could not be spent on feeding hungry people rather than observing well-fed people. Trollfucious will write a letter to the government and explain it to them.
If a person eats a lot of tasty foods, like the KFC and the Doritos and cake, then they will get more fat. Also sugary things like Fanta will do it. So if people are getting fat, they must be eating those things, and should maybe eat salads or broccoli. Honorable mother is very not-fat, and mostly all she does is drink bourbon, so maybe that helps people lose weight too.
Trollfucious wonders that the joke has not been made yet that the reason is because in relationships with two women, they both belong in the kitchen. However, is only a joke and Trollfucious would like to be in the kitchen too except that honorable mother took all the knobs to oppress Trollfucious from cooking and fighting gender stereotyping :(
