Brazil is one of several South American countries to have abolished
life imprisonment
. The maximum sentence is 40 years.
Rape and molestation of children actually
rarely give life sentences
. I asked a guy from the CPS what the longest sentence he'd seen given was and it was 7 years for molesting two children.

So grandma helped little girl murder babies, and the catholic church kicks them out. I wonder, are you more abhorred that babies are dead or that the grandma and the little girl mom aren't allowed in church anymore? I think it isn't appropriate to kick people out of church who want to go to church and obviously need church. That's where I differ from Catholicism. Catholicism treats the church like it's a club that you need membership to, and they can kick you out. However, grandma and little girl mom killed a baby. I doubt that the 9 year old is morally accountable for this decision, though. It's just bad all around. This is one where there are no winners. One raped little girl. One rapist dad in jail. One grandma who made the tough decision to have the twin babies murdered. Two dead babies. One stupid group that doesn't understand its own religion. Sad.

@MyTie- It said it was a "life-saving" procedure. Does that mean she wouldn't have survived the pregnancy/delivery? If the parent was choosing between the 9 year-old's life and the babies' lives, I could see it being a greyer issue, especially since pregnancies that kill the mother generally have a high chance of killing the baby as well, so letting it continue might very well have left all three dead.
I'm pro-life, but in a case where it's going to be a fatal pregnancy, especially one that will most likely kill mother and child, I don't consider that the same.

Could have. I'm not saying there is any good decision here, by anybody. That poor girl.

Well, it is their religion. The Vatican sort of owns it. That's their business. So, it actually is their business. I would say they don't do a very good job administering their business, but it is theirs.

Matthew 5:21, Matthew 18:15-17. Where are they misunderstanding Jesus' commandments?

I kind of like this
. Exile has worked well in the past, and I think it will work good for future criminals. I advocate an exile system, which is pretty much what prison is, only permanent life sentences and more hospitable environments.
Edit: If I watch that 40+ minute video, will you take my opinion on it with care or are you just going to disagree with whatever I say. If so, I won't bother.

Because a 9 year old girl doesn't have the capcity to be accountible for "murder" nor understand those decisions (Matt 5), much less be baptised into the Church as designed by Christ, and so isn't a "brother or sister" (Matt 18).

Is this to me?
Yes you. I mean, if I have to watch what I already know it is going to be (one group talking about all the good things the church has done and the other group talking about all the bad, with neither acknowledging the validity of the other side), I want to be able to tell you what my criticism will be (that both catholics and atheists have done good and bad and that neither side can be judged as a whole and need to be judged on an individual basis, so I reject the question), you won't argue with my criticism. You'll just accept it, as a thank you for sitting through 40 minutes of that, since I don't particularly want to discuss it either.

Ok, but we agree that exile is a better option than building expensive facilities for them to sit in?

Does the Marianas Trench count as exile?
