So you changed Spellstone in favor for Spellstone? :P
Anyway, Spellstone is to be used by all specs except for full destro, which uses Firestone.
Haste > Crit for all specs.

Everyone should use a spellstone.
Haste is better than crit but there still is a need for crit, especially with destruction, so don't completely disregard it. Try to get gear with both if possible.

I beg to differ. Last time i checked the majority (+80%) of the damage destro deals is from direct (fire) damage. Read the tooltip lately?
Use: While applied to target weapon it
increases damage dealt by direct spells by 1%
and spell critical strike rating by 49. Lasts for 1 hour. In addition,
each attack has a chance to deal 188 to 282 additional fire damage
.
Vs.
Use: While applied to target weapon it
increases damage dealt by periodic spells by 1%
and spell haste rating by 60.
What would you rather increase by 1%? That ~20% or ~80%? Not to mention the extra fire damage. That 60 haste rating equals roughly 90 crit rating.

1% damage? wow thats a HUGE amount.
REMEMBER haste>crit, it always has been as far as i can remember and probably always will be. That was the basis of my comment.

it's been covered in a few threads.
spellstone > firestone in all cases.
...the exception to this rule is deep demo where the difference is incredibly small. my personal testing put the spellstone very slightly ahead even for destro but the results were well within the margin for error and the testing was far from exhaustive.
generally, it's decent advice for people to use a spellstone no matter what spec they are and if people want a 'sound bite' piece of advice then that's the best thing to say. for those more interested then you get this longer explanation.
in the case of the OP's anecdote, a change from firestone to spellstone would never be so noticeable as to move you from 3rd to 1st on a meter. there were other variables at play and i think you're probably attaching too much significance to the one thing you noticed changing.
the really important thing is that people put ANY stone of their weapon. tbh, the actual choice is just min/maxing.

hmm, not quite. that's really a little over-simplified and based on too many assumptions to draw any conclusions from.
the main reason why haste is better than crit (which you slightly touched on) is simply that you need more crit rating to achieve 1% than you do haste rating. add to this the fact that crit is subject to a slight diminishing return and the game heavily favours haste.
the answer to the simple question of, generally, which is better? is haste in all cases. for all specs.
the inclusion of the percent modifier on the temporary weapon enchants complicates things. haste is not so simply defined as a stat that increases damage output across the board. heavily DoT based specs only benefit from haste in that it provides more GCDs for filler spells. the DoTs themselves are a constant. that's not bad, it just needs to be taken into account.
the conclusion you draw is basically correct though. any theorycrafted difference for the one spec that is in doubt (all the others clearly favour the spellstone) would never be visible in a raid environment. even a simulation would take several thousand iterations to define a difference.
edit: mentioning a simulation i ran a quick simcraft parse to see the difference:
7777 50.0% Warlock_T8_00_13_58+FS
7776 50.0% Warlock_T8_00_13_58+SS
i said it was close but i'm pretty surprised it was THAT close.

umm 1% actually does make a difference when your capable of doing 10K + dmg per shot LOL.. do you know how to do math?
sorry firestone is better for destro.. your wrong..
I agree haste > crit, but again pretty much all destro locks I know use firestone...Yes, that 100 more damage is
quite
epic.
There is no definitive answer as to which one is ultimately better for Destruction. It's a personal choice, but claiming that either one is so much better that everyone should use it is not well-thought out.

This is a big attraction for me, though I wonder if it works when you request resyncs on other people's profiles.
It's now on my shopping list after my next game-time cards and upgrading my RaF account to WotLK.
(Maybe Wowhead will be able to focus some more of their marketing budget on us if lots subscribe, comp prizes for non-US members plz!)
