You can use Auctioneer to find some great deals. Bid low, sell high.
Here's a little secret that's working well for me on my server right now.
Thorium ore is going for 40-50g per stack. The
Azerothian diamonds,
large opals, and
huge emeralds that you can get from prospecting the stacks are going for 20g each. Sure, you could end up with
blue sapphire and
star ruby too, but they're going for about 8g each.
Now I'm no good with probability and math, but I'm going to see at least 4 gems and at max 8 gems from that stack of ore. I have a 3 in 5 chance (I know, technically incorrect probability) of prospecting out a 20g gem. Even at 50g per stack, I'm making out like mad. I could probably buy ore for 70g a stack and profit.
What do you need to achieve this? An investment. It's not totally difficult to get a Jewelcrafting alt to 250 skill. I'll load up my Auctioneer and give you some numbers on ore purchases and gem sales in a minute.
Edit:
- Thorium ore - lost 4208g
- Huge emerald - gained 1671g
- Large opal - gained 1177g
- Azerothian diamond - gained 1239g
- Blue sapphire - gained 671g
- Star ruby - gained 452g
These numbers do not take into account the 40 large opals (800g), 27 blue sapphires(216g), 46 Azerothian diamonds (920g), 29 huge emeralds (580g), and the 12 star rubies (96g) I have stashed. Oh, nor do the numbers take into account the 6 stacks of ore I bought but have yet to prospect.
If anyone wants to hash out the numbers there, be my guest. All I know is that I see gold.
Edit: Between 4 and 8 gems each stack, so that's 6 gems on average. 20+20+20+8+8=76, and 76/5=~15.2g average value per gem. 15.2 x 6 = 91.2g made per stack of thorium ore.
