When writing Healing spreadsheets, you generally do it in 2 distinct sections: Healing Output (usually in HPS) and Mana longevity (Usually in seconds, I'll abbreviate this TTOOM as in Time to OOM). You carry these calculations all the way to the end, and then you actually come up with 2 stat weights, Effect-on-HPS and Effect-on-TTOOM. Then you need to decide how to weight them when you average them out, the classic number was 1:4 MP5 vs. HPS (That is, The longevity increase of 1 mp5 is worth the HPS increase of 4 Spell power). This is just an arbitrary ratio for comparing what is basically apples and oranges. This is the ratio you tweak when you have a specific problem with either Longevity or HPS. You weight each half of the equation and combine into a single scale, and bam you have a Resto weight scale. (There is another method which uses "Total healing done before OOM" to combine these stats into one scale pre-calculation, but I've found its not as reliable and definitely not as tweakable).
Now, as Gorefiend said, Innervate used to make Spirit the hands down regen stat over mp5 (budget-wise, not 1 to 1); and in TBC definitely over intellect as well, until Int went into the MP5 calculation, but even after that, Spirit was king.
With everything the way it is currently, the Longevity benefits of 1 Intellect outweigh that of 1 Spirit for the following reasons:
- 1 Intellect gives you 15 mana (This is affected by Kings):
- This gives you an intrinsic increase to your TTOOM
- This also increases the MP5 granted by Replenishment (and anything else that works as a function of your maximum mana).
1 Intellect increases your total mana regen (OS5SR MP5) (This is affected by Kings)
- The impact is less than that of 1 Spirit.
Intellect gets 'buffed' by kings twice, effectively, so it comes out on top there. In long fights, Replenishment is one of your main sources of mana, increasing the replenishment amount and the size of your mana pool causes Intellect to come out on top versus Spirit.
This doesn't mean you should exclusively stack Int at the cost of Spirit -- much of Int's effectiveness is dependent on the amount of Spirit you have, actually. The goal should be to keep them
relatively balanced, favoring Int over Spirit when given the choice. (Hence Gorefiends SP > Int > Spirit > ...)

I still prefer to stack spirit over int due to intensity. I have about 1300 spirit with kings and divine spirit. I ench and gem for sp over spirit but all my gear has spirit on it. With either imp BoW or imp Mana tote I have almost 500 mp5 while casting and I have minimal mp5 gear.
Do some math and you will see that int gives way more mana regen than spirit with replenishment. And the times you happen to not have replenishment? Also, did you forget about the
iToL talent? That is why you should be loving spirit.
To each his own, i guess.
