Obama calls abortion a "
fundamental constitutional right
" on the 39th anniversary of Roe vs Wade.
How will this be viewed, by future societies who study why we thought it was ok for a mother to kill her unborn child?

That the government doesn't have the right to control a human body?

That the government doesn't have the right to control a human body?
Can the government say that people should not kill their children?

Yes, but until a certain point, a fetus is not considered a child under law. Yes, the teenage wasteland uses them too much, but at the same time, it's a good alternative to being forced to grow an unwanted child after a rape or the like.
That being said, no one, be it government, religious group or what have you, has any right to tell anyone what they can and cannot do with their own body.

Yes, but until a certain point, a fetus is not considered a child under law.Legality does not qualify morality. If a child were not considered a child until age 3, it would be wrong to kill your child. Yes, the teenage wasteland uses them too much, but at the same time, it's a good alternative to being forced to grow an unwanted child after a rape or the like. Abortion due to rape constitutes less than 1% of all abortions. In 2006, 50% of all pregnancies in New York city ended in abortion. That being said, no one, be it government, religious group or what have you, has any right to tell anyone what they can and cannot do with their own body.
It's not just "their own body", but also the body of another living human being. That "lump of flesh" is a human, by DNA proof, and is alive, by the terms which we generally agree constitute life. How could you arrive at the conclusion that there is only one body there? Truth be told, not much actually happens to a womans body, but it is the child's body that actually, ya know, dies. If you wanted to be completely honest, you would consider that the woman is actually determining that the child's body will die. How's that for "telling someone what they can and cannot do with their own body". Denying one the ability to live.

/shrug So, you'd rather have the child carried to full term, then dumped into an orphanage, where it may or may not be adopted over the course of it's life, depending on who the mother had been?
Abortion due to rape constitutes less than 1% of all abortions. In 2006, 50% of all pregnancies in New York city ended in abortion.I'd like to see the numbers between those two; how many of that 50% was actually due to rape. Of course, there are cases where a young girl, raped by a family member/friend of the family, who ended up pregnant and had to have the fetus aborted or the girl would have died due to complications.
Beyond that: I don't care. If a woman wants to have an abortion after a one night stand, that's her choice. If a married woman wants to abort a child after getting pregnant by her lover(IE not the husband), still her choice.
What I do want, is the religious fanatic doctors who &*!@ with young girls, and keep on forcing them past the 23rd week period where they can't have the abortion anymore, just because they think they know best for the girls, whether they are actually of the same belief or not, to be arrested, have their medical licenses stripped and face full censer for their actions....and not be treated as if they are doing 'a good thing'.

Thing is, is that a fetus =/= a child. To me, a fetus is a potential human, just like sperm or unfertilized eggs. An acorn isn't an oak tree.
A consensus on whether or not the fetus is actually a human being can never really be reached, when you get down to it, because of the ridiculous amount of factors involved. You'll be hard pressed to find two people agree on every biological, medical, philosophical, and societal aspects involved with that question.
I'm pro-choice, not because I think "killing" (if it can really be called that) is right, I'm pro-choice because the decision of carrying a fertilized egg/fetus and giving birth it is wholly up to the discretion of the mother. Not you, me, the government, or the Church.
Why do you consider a fetus to be a human being?
