I was in a very similar situation back in Vanilla when MC was released. I had leveled from around 12 to 60 in my guild. They made me an officer at level 20ish. I invited a bunch of my RL friends and we all "grew up" in game together. At 60, we hit a plateau and couldn't progress anymore due to conflicting schedules. Myself, along with the other officers, had talked with another guild on my server who was looking for apps about a possible guild merger.
What was supposed to happen was this:
Their guild consumes my guild. I become an officer to represent my former guildmates in the new guild, we progress through content, everyone wins.
What actually happened:
Their leadership on raids was appalling. They were complete elitist jerks and they didn't follow through with a single promise they had made. They even had their officers log off after a Garr attempt because he messed up the Warlock and Hunter assignments which caused a wipe. From there, the Guildmaster flipped out on me (being a Hunter) and not their officer who assigned us our targets, and blamed everything on my former guildmates. He then ragehearthed and logged out. From there, my former guildmates and I all realized what a huge mistake we made and /gquit. The problem was unforeseeable as they wouldn't let one of us tag along on a raid prior to joining the guild. They also seemed like really nice guys with decent reputations on the server. So, we had no idea that they would blow up and act like 12 year old's.
Since you have raided with this new guild and have seen first hand how nice they are, I would suggest to see if your friend's guild would consider a complete guild merger so you and all of your current guildmates could still play together with the same guild tag, as well as progress through content together. If your friend's guild isn't interested in the merger, I suggest you talk to your guildmates about your wanting to progress and the fact that you're considering joining a bigger guild. Some will feel like you're ditching them, some will wish you the best of luck. There is really no simple solution if you're as close with your current guildmates as you say you are. So, I guess you should inquire about a guild merger, and talk to your guildmates to see if they even want to merge/progress/end-game raids/etc.
Hope that helps.
