One spec doesn't have any different gear requirements than any other.

I know the current PvE spec is destro.
that's a silly thing to say.

I think he meant the best raid DPS at the moment comes from an optimized destro specced warlock.

i know what he meant and it's silly.
the notion that there's one spec that worth playing is annoyingly pernicious.
it's out dated, untrue and not something we want so let's not allow that thinking to permeate.

So then I'm curious...if it's untrue, then what in your opinion would be the most competitive spec?

the best spec, by a wide margin, is the one that the player is most comfortable with.
this isn't tBC, the specs are super close together so lets enjoy that and stop trying desperately to cling on to the idea that there's one spec to rule them all.

To OP, 14% is a bit low for destro. Although the different specs do not in fact have different gear reqs, deep destro does require higher lvl gear to perform very well.
I kept 41/30 for a long time until i got 2t8 set bonus and crit around 20% unbuffed.

this isn't true.
statements like this get made a lot with nothing to back them up. take no heed.
3/13/55 is an excellent starter spec due to it's inclusion of suppression and relatively simple rotation.
it performs very nicely with starter gear (partly because it does particularly well in a heroic 5-man environment of quick fights) and haste > crit applies at every gear level so don't worry about your crit rating just choose the best item each time you have an option.

I respect this analogy. After all, if one isn't comfortable with a spec, then one will not get optimal DPS out of it. Makes sense.

It takes 30 minutes to become comfortable with any given spec, just hit a practice dummy.
for some, perhaps. sadly not for most and certainly not for most of those for whom the advice is tailored.
as for your gear point, you're talking about gear caps which is a (related but) different topic to gear requirements.
you also mention that "at some point" crit becomes more valuable than haste. i think that if you really looked into it you'd find that that point is far higher than you think it is.
hero/bloodlust + backdraft is a terrible point to measure a stat's worth since is relatively such a small part of you time spent attacking a boss.

41/30, most likely. But playstyle can also play a role in personal dps.
