According to http://warcraftpets.com there are 94 non-combat pets available at the moment. Add here new ones from WotLK...
So, this achievement is not difficult for true pet collectors. ^^

PS: As announced recently, in Wrath pets and mounts will be stored as spells and no longer take your precious inventory space.

Well, after searching through the beta's "companions" list, I've found quite a few pets that don't match up with the current available pets. Could these be the new pets in WotLK?

I believe that Wowhead is actually messing an achievement, Pandemic of Pets, which is the one to collect 50 and receive the skunk pet, and this achievement is actually 75 pets as it originally was, but without the skunk reward.

Considering I wasn't looking at the achievement page when I was creating the list, it's hardly impossible.

Our list has fundamental differences. It's hardly copy/paste. The only part that is even similar is alliance/horde/neutral vendors, because, well duh, there aren't that many ways to express that.

Excuse me for not keeping my more comprehensive list to myself just because someone else decided to make one like it a few hours before me.

Nope. You are thinking of Gold Medallion, which I listed at 76. The Competitor's Souvenir was a recolored version of it.

Collectors Edtion pets and some promo items are now BoA

Breanni quoted a Blue Post, Breanii's arcticale Found Here

The following items will be changed to "Account Bound " items:

• Murky (Blue Murloc Egg)
• Tyrael's Hilt
• Murloc Costume
• All of the collector's edition pets

Also, for the "pet" items, we're making it so that adding the pet to your collection will not remove the item from your inventory. With that change, you'll be able to learn Murky on any character on the same realm with the character that currently has Murky. It also means that if you own the original Collector's Edition, you'll be able to have all 3 pets (Zerg, Diablo, Panda) by mailing the items between characters. If this works out well in the Beta and people like the change, we'll keep it in.

Maybe I missed that part when reading these comments but when I'd completed it I had no idea where to go ... i.e. till I realized I had mail, woohoo! :)

For those who have collector's edition pets, notice that they are now bound on account, meaning you can have all 3 original CE pets; Mini Diablo, Panda and Zergling. Just transfer them through the mail box.

It would be awesome if the reward for having so many companions was the ability to summon 3 of them at once IMO. Maybe programming-wise it would be a no-no? Being able to summon 3 of my favorite pets at a time would've been ideal for me as a pet collector or maybe that's just me :)

Collector's editon pets are going to be bind-on-acccount so you can create new characters and mail them to your main, or whoever, and thus get all 3.

You can get a Vampiric Batling from a new boss in Karazhan, everyone in the raid gets this pet and I expect that it will only be in game until the WotLK comes out but cna't confirm that, however should think about getting it sooner than later just in case.

Grinding whelps for hours on end... extremely boring.
Turning WoW into a weird Pokemon type collecting game... somewhat disturbing.
Getting to 50 pets prior to WotLK... mildly impressive.
Mr. Pinchy randomly dropping your 50th pet while you grind said whelps... priceless.

Where is the next level of this achievement? I just reached 70 pets and know of atleast 8 more off the top of my head. It seems wierd for this achievement to top out so low!

Added edit: The current PTR patch has a 100 pet achievement, and it looks like the pet rewarded is a small deer!

Just wanted to offer up my recent project to help track mount acquisition:

It starts out giving you a list of all available mounts. You check which ones you have, and then it counts them, generates a pretty list of them (with WoWhead links), and also generates a pretty list of the ones you don't have, along with a description of how to get each. Last, and most importantly, it generates a "code" for your collection, so you can bookmark the page and come back to it later to update your collection. Just don't forget to update your bookmark, because it works basically like the WoWhead talent calculator.

I've tested it in Firefox and IE and everything appears to be working. Let me know if you encounter any bugs or have any suggestions. I haven't yet made sure everything works prettily if you do something stupid (i.e., select both Horde and Alliance mounts, changing numbers in your code, etc.).

It shows I have 66 mounts and has them numbered in alphabetical order. The pet reward, Stinker, is a cultural reference to Pepe Le Pew from Looney Toons. The letter you receive the pet in mentions that Stinker has "a thing for black cats," just as Pepe Le Pew did for the cat, Penelope Pussycat in the cartoon show. He persued her around all the time, imagining that she a real skunk. Blizzard makes fun of this by making your pet, Stinker, chase around black or bombay cats in the game with a heart hovering above its head.

The pets Lil' Smoky and Pet Bombling can now be obtained from the schematic dropped by Mekgineer Thermaplugg, the final boss in Gnomeregan, and Arcane Nullifier X-21 in the corridor outside. Unfortunately the actual pets are BoP so yet another way of engineers making money down the drain!

Breanni is the true blue pet collector. I'm so glad Blizz honored him with his own in game NPC lol.

And with every patch it seems it is a lot easier to get this achievement. Seems like it is inevitable that they will be adding the 100 pet achievement by Cataclysm.

As of the current (15-Apr-2012) Mists of Pandaria Beta Build (15589) The following Pet Achievements have been remove from the General Tab:

Can I Keep Him?
Plenty of Pets
Plethora of Pets
Shop Smart, Shop Pet...Smart which awards Stinker (Reeking Pet Carrier)
Lil' Game Hunter which awards Little Fawn (Little Fawn's Salt Lick)
Petting Zoo which awards Nuts (Nuts' Acorn)
Menagerie which awards Brilliant Kaliri (Brilliant Kaliri)
Littlest Pet Shop which awards Celestial Dragon (Celestial Dragon)

That leaves the future of obtaining these pets associated with the achievements uncertain. There is a section in the achievement screen for "Pet Battles" but it's too soon to tell exactly what will happen. If you are close to finishing one of the achievements and getting one of the 5 pets, may be worth trying to finish just in case!

I dont know how but I got Reeking Pet Carrier = Stinker way before I had 50 pets. Currently have 41 and I know I got him a long time ago. maybe the #'s in regards to getting him have changed.

Has anyone had trouble with this since the patch? Before the patch I had 48, just got 2 more pets today, bringing my total to 50. But I didn't get the achievement. I checked my pet journal, it said 50, but the achievement tracker still reads 48. Maybe the only pets that count for this now are pets you win by battling?

Edit: Turns out that the Horde Balloon (which for some reason pops up twice in my journal) doesn't count toward the achievement, maybe because you can't battle with it? However, it is counted (twice) on my pet journal, leading to the confusion.

This achievement chain is going to 600 unique pets, and you are rewarded through the achievements with 8 pets.

The achievement are:
Can I Keep Him? which require 1 unique pet
Plenty of Pets which require 15 unique pets
Plethora of Pets which require 25 unique pets
Shop Smart, Shop Pet...Smart which require 50 unique pets and rewards Reeking Pet Carrier that gives you the pet Stinker
Lil' Game Hunter which require 75 unique pets and rewards Little Fawn's Salt Lick that gives you the pet Little Fawn
Petting Zoo which require 100 unique pets and rewards Nuts' Acorn that gives you the pet Nuts
Menagerie which require 125 unique pets and rewards Brilliant Kaliri that gives you the pet Brilliant Kaliri
