These dropped off about 1 out of every 3 hydra's in Umbrafen Lake and The Lagoon.

i dont reccomend hydras in deadmire it took ages like a 15% droprate for me and theres them annoying mobs that interfere there aswell

The drop rate on the scales seems to be terrible. I killed about 30 Mire Hydras and only got 2 scales. Since the only reward is a couple of gold, I gave up at this point, abandoned the quest and moved on to other things.

One of the worst drop rates I've seen in a quest in a while, just as the previous guy who posted said, its only a 2g reward, so If I were you, I wouldn't waste any time on this quest... I abandoned the quest also.

Drop rate was fine for me - done the quest 3 times now (3 different characters) and the quest took 10-15 minutes each time. The hydras in deadmire are easy, they don't do much dmg except for their flame breath which can be interrupted (kick, pummel, etc.) or avoided by running away when the hydra begins casting (they stand still when casting).

This quest is best saved until you start doing Angling to Beat the Competition (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=9845) from Zabra'jin. The droprate seemed pretty good, only took me about 10-15 mins as a holy pally to complete both quests

My best drop rate by far was off the Fenclaw Thrashers that are right around the Coilfang Reservoir. I got 8 Scales off 15 Thrashers.

as recommended above, i completed this quest at the same time as the Angling the Competition quest. the hydras at 40,50ish dropped the scales at 100% rate, meaning i had to kill exactly 12 of them to complete both quests. very nice pair.

I just did it with the Marsh Hydras giving me a 100% drop rate. The Parched Hydras seemed to be lees than 10%. This may be a change after the recent update.

This quest is good to take as it give you a free potion (which you do not need to use as alot of the Marsh Hydras are near the shore) and allows you to go on to the next quest http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=9771

I just did the quest, pretty easy.. Just ran around the umbrafen lake, there's a whole lot here and they are easy to kill.. lvl 60-61 and they dropped 100% for me :)

Mire Hydra have the highest drop rate at 100% for Thick Hydra Scale.
You can find them around "The Lagoon" and "Umbrafen Lake".

best spot hands down...100% drop rate is around the edges of umbrafen lake....just kill the mire hydras

Really good drop rate, just kill the Mire Hydras around the Umbrafen Lake, near the shore. I got a 100% drop rate from there. Just stay on the ground and you won't aggro the Eels standing aside.

I recommend going straight to Coilfang Resivor (52,39) I had an almost 100% drop rate, took about 5 min. Help to have Greater Water Breathing or something similar.

If you abandon this quest, the water breathing potions you receive *stay* in your inventory; they're unique, but once you use them, you can re-accept the quest for another 3 - repeat as necessary. Free water-breathing potions for the life of your character =)

The hardest part of this quest is actually waiting for them to respawn. Im playing post WOTLK so lots of people out here. The best thing I found to do was walk around the back of Umbrafen Lake. They stay on the coast. Do the quests where you have to gather the wing parts from the fireflies and the marshfang ripper quests. Those mobs are both back there so its pretty easy to knock out all 3 at the same time.

24 mobs (I killed them in Dead Mire), 50% drop rate on something that technically should drop thick scales 100% of the time

Get your scales from the Hydras around Umbrafen Lake, and you can do the other couple quests while you're at it, almost seems like a better drop rate than the Dead Mire Hydras.

Thick Hydra Scales

Zurai at Swamprat Post wants you to bring him 12 Thick Hydra Scales.

Description

Reavij was wise to bring leather armor. This swamp will render my mail useless before long.

I've been replacing the scales bit by bit as I'm able. The hydra in the marsh have thick, protective scales that stand up well to the dampness of their home.

Finding suitable ones is a tedious process, though. All too often, the best scales are torn or worn too thin for use in armor. Bring me any good ones that you might get from the hydra in the larger lakes.
