This mob drops a Wolf Totem upon death, using it turns you into a Spectral Wolf for 2 minutes.
(The Spectral Wolf form is removed upon taking any damage and is mainly used to gather 3 relics for the Buried Treasures achievement. These three relics being Warsong Remains, Wolf Pup Remains and Gnarled Bone.)

The totem you need for the achievement will NOT be in the normal loot.
It will spawn next to the dead body then you can click it.

Where is this guy located? How often does he spawn? Is he considered a rare?

So they seem to only drop once the wolfsong person is in wolf form for a couple of seconds. If you have a party member with you they can also pick up the things you dig up while in wolf form! I thought was really cool and saved us tons of time. Only one person can pick up the totem though to turn in to the wolf. I hope that helps anyone looking around for it!

I found that this NPC spawns alternatively as a male or a female.

I was able to loot the totem but did not transform into a spectral wolf until I dismissed my hunter pet.

Killed him twice - no totem... is this a bug? I even dismissed my pet before hand.

To find the totem - we found that if we killed this guy in his hut we had a hard time finding the totem, but if we pulled him outside (and made sure to wait until he was in wolf form before killing him) then the totem was easy to find on the ground.

This NPC is required as part of Buried Treasures achievement.

You will nee to kill him (Inside or Outside doesnt matter) while in wolf form and loot the skull he drops. Find a Dirt Mound on the ground you will be able to find two locations around where he spawns one behind the wolf barn on the right side and another just few steps back next to the entrance on the left.

NOTE: Once you loot the skull he drops you will go into wolf form and with 2 min buff time, BUT your buff will fall off if you got hit or even if you agro'ed any NPC's or wolves around so I suggest you clear the barn 1st.

Spawn timer for this NPC is short and the Dirt Mound spawn timer is short too so you dont have to go and search for another one around just loot the same one and you will get the requested items (Warsong Remains, Wolf Pup Remains & Gnarled Bone)

I got extremely frustrated with this achievement until I figured out my problem. Don't have any pets or bodyguards with you when you attempt to do the wolf-form portions. Once I dismissed my bodyguard, I was considered stealthed to the mobs and it was easy after that.

Also, I had a difficult time finding the item to turn me into a wolf to begin with. I realized that if you pay close attention when it dies, the skull flies from his hand, and is then easy to find.

Interesting quirk - you can't actually enter or leave the wolfsong's hut while in cat form. Maybe the wolf shaman warded against cats? Changing to any other form allows entry. (More likely just a pathing glitch)

I think it's worth adding a couple of things in:

Whether you're on the quest, or have already completed it for the day, doesn't matter. The Wolfsong will still drop the totem, so don't worry about it.
Sometimes, the Wolfsong simply doesn't drop it; this is including when he or she goes into wolf-form, you've no pets, no bodyguards, no group and you know that you're looking for a cogwheel skull on the floor and not a lootable item. Sometimes, it just doesn't get dropped.
A couple of comments suggest waiting on the mounds to respawn. Don't. They don't respawn fast enough, so you're going to have to find all three of them depending on where you transform.
The mounds can drop duplicates, so don't expect to only need to find three - you may end up needing four, or even five before you get all three buried items.

Most of the advice on this page is pretty good, but I found this particular achievement frustrating because I had expectations that turned out not to be true.

If you're also here to find where Mok'gol Wolfsong is for Buried Treasures, you can use this:

/npcscan add 86659 Mok'gol Wolfsong

Make sure you look around to loot Wolf totem (looks like an animal skull, on the ground) to get the buff. Make sure you REALLY look around, because I have had the "totem" spawn under a treasure chest, and it was almost impossible to see.
