You get one free upgrade with the purchase of WoD, more will be available for (still speculation) 60$ per character.

Ok, so I completely skipped MoP. Didn't play WoW since Deathwing raid.
First off allow me to say you've missed out. This has been one of the best expansions I've ever played.
The most important one: Is the character upgrade free? I can't seem to find a google answer to that. I read that the public teast realm has some kind of "transfer" be needed to do it and a colleague of mine said it was about fifty bucks? Is this true
With the purchase of WoD you get one free boost to 90. You can choose to use this on a freshly created character (thus bringing it from 1 to 90) or you can use it on your lvl 85 main to dig into the new expansion right away.
If you want any other extra boosts to 90 you will have to pay 60$. (The paid boost is what was being tested on the PTR)
Second, I'm gonna focus on 1 thing and 1 thing only, that's progression raiding. Not hardcore, not completely casual either. I just want a night or three to raid for example. I'm gonna do this with one character, and the raiding will be mostly with one spec where I am going to focus on. (prob prot pala)
BUT I'm not a college student anymore, and have a seriously relationship (no kids yet fortunately), so I really can't be spending the time to the game that I used to do.
So, my question, a rought estimate, with the raiding and the farming for emblems (or whatever they are called these days), gold, etc... How many hours a week I would be playing the game itself? By that I mean really playing. Reading up on boss fights etc. I can do while commuting to work or something...
Game difficulty has evolved over time, they added in MoP a new difficulty mode called Flexible Mode. Its easier than Normal mode, but harder than LFR. Its biggest feature is that this mode is neither 10man nor 25. Instead you bring as many players as you want, any number between 10 and 25 will do (12, 15, 20, 13, etc) and the bosses' HP and damage is adjusted on the fly depending on how many players are in your raid. The second advantage of this mode is that its doable-cross realm though not through a random Group Finder like LFR, you have to manually invite people to go in.
This has led to the creation of an addon called Oqueue to quickly find and create cross-realm groups to complete raids in Flexible mode.
This is good news for you because in Warlords of Draenor, Flexible mode will become the new Normal Mode. Normal Mode will become Heroic, and Heroic will be renamed Mythic (and will be fixed at only 20 player difficulty).
In other words, you'll be able to raid cross-realm, on a group that can have any size between 10 to 25. Given that your main will be a tank, as long as you know what you're doing and you take the time to properly gear up, finding groups will be remarkably easy for you, allowing you to raid at any time you want, any day you want to.
So I'd say WoD is right on track for you.

I don't think anyone can tell you a specific number of hours you would average in-game in an expansion that hadn't come out yet. Their guess would be based on MoP, and I don't see how that's any better than the guess you would have based on cata, considering neither of them is WoD.

That's highly up to personal preference and opinion, and I think a lot of people would disagree; don't make him feel bad for this.

I very specifically said this is one of the best expansions "I" have ever played. The fact that I said "I" and not "the best blizzard has made" should be a sufficient indicator that what I said was a personal opinion, subjective based on my specific taste. I never implied otherwise.
Every expansion has its supporters and its detractors, that's how personal taste works, and I REALLY hate obsessing over which side is the "majority" because ultimately its irrelevant on the grand scheme of things. I hated cataclysm (as did quite a lot of people I know) and yet I also know a lot of people that loved it. I loved MoP, as did almost everyone I know. But I've also seen those who've hated it.
Who's the majority? who the hell cares? =/ OP asked for an opinion and I gave it, and at no point did I implied my opinion was universal or a "fact".
