You registered the game to your battle.net ID? If so it should automatically detect it once you login.

Go to your account on the Blizzard web-site and check that it does indeed say that it's upgraded to MoP. If not, you need to upgrade.
Cheers.

You must register the license codes on your Battlenet account. That's what you pay for, the license. Anyone can download the game from the website or from someone else's disks for free.
Once you have input the license codes in the correct places, your account will show the correct access to content.

The program is the same no matter your account status. What you paid for is how far you can advance in the game, which levels you can reach and what zones you can visit.
From what I gathered, you had the Battle Chest first, played a while, and then got Cataclysm?
The CDs/DVDs are more of a legacy. They have the version of the program that was current when the base game or the respective expansion was released. Before you could login with that version, it updated itself to the current one.
Now, when you add an expansion code to your account,
there is no additional installation or download necessary, this is why the setup just started the game normally
. You can just log in and access the game content from that expansion immediately.
For Cataclysm, that content would be zones for level 80 and above, once you reach level 80, you'll automatically (well, you may have to enter a major city) receive a quest that directs you to these new zones.

I'd also like to chime in here as well, because this can all get pretty confusing. Another way to think about the whole thing is that there's really only one World of Warcraft (per region) and the game that gets downloaded pretty much has everything that you need. Now, depending on which account you use to access the game, you will either have more or less content to access depending on what level that account has been upgraded to.
Now, what can make this more confusing is that in addition to the different expansion levels that the account can be upgraded to, you also have all these different discs - some of which are the most recent discs, and some of which are the older discs. You only ever want to use a disc to install the game if it's the most recent one. Otherwise, the game data which is out of date has to be 'Optimized' which can take longer than if you just did a
digital download
of the game to begin with.
If anyone ever has any questions about the accounts, or how to set them up, install them or upgrade- feel free to reach out to us. We offer
live web chat
with our representatives during our normal phone hours across the various regions :)
Hope this also helps!

You have a level 81 toon, so at the least Cata was applied properly to your account. It sounds like you're having trouble entering the Cata zones. Are you trying to do Vashjir or Hyjal?

Have you tried looking at the Hero's Call boards?
What quests are in your log?
Did you at any point find yourself in Moonglade and talk with a dragon for a ride?
Check the little island in the lake near the palace for any functioning portals.
Both Hyjal and Vash'jir are available for all players regardless of faction. And don't feel bad. There were a lot of people getting lost at this point even at Cata launch. :)
