For every time that you missing costs you the game, someone else gets lucky and wins a tough fight because of a well-timed miss. The point is so that there is some suspense in a pet battle- without the ability to miss, everything comes down to math. I know that I have x abilities, guaranteed to do Y damage, and he has Z health, so I know right at the beginning that I am 100% going to win this fight before he kills me. Or, if there is a tough fight that your team wipes on a few times, this gives you a chance to get lucky and finally win it if it's close. It's supposed to make it so every fight is not a foregone conclusion, which would be pretty boring IMO. Critical strikes serve the same purpose in Pet Battles. I do feel that some abilities miss more often than other, even when not stated in the tooltip. Now i forgot the name of the one im thinking of, but the 3-round one you use after arcane storm that a few "arcane-themed" pets posses.

I do believe the tooltips for some abilities are not accurate. For instance the dive/flyby abilities miss a lot more than regular hits but the tooltip doesn't reflect this.
