Why did you start playing, and continue to play, World of Warcraft?

I'm sitting here at work, bored, thought I'd ask a question and see why people originally chose to play this game, and why they continue to play it.
For me, I started in 2006. I had moved the year before, which, in hindsight, turned out to be a horrible idea.
I was always a gamer, so I was looking for games to play. I had played EverQuest previously, and had a ton of fun with it, leveling a Necromancer and a Mage, selling ports outside of Freeport, and came across this game. I read some reviews and decided to buy the game.
I created a Night Elf Priest (my EQ character was a High Elf, and fyi, that damn treetop city can burn to the ground), which is my main to this day, and had fun. I had just hit 60 by the time BC was released (couple of weeks, if that).
I quit around Cataclysm's time. I leveled my main to 85, thought "I'm bored", and quit. Jump to mid-2012, dating my current girlfriend, she tells me she played the game, has multiple level 85s, and is still actively paying.
With MoP's release, I figured, why not try again? Leveled my main to 90, running countless dungeons and raids (both LFR and on realm), and I'm having a blast. My second most played character, a level 80 Paladin, is now almost 90.
To sum up, I originally played WoW out of boredom, and now continue to play it for the social aspect and that MoP seems to have gotten most things right in terms of an expansion.
How about you? Be as detailed or as short as you want. :)

It's not very entertaining...
Why did I start playing?
I have no recollection as to any particular reason. However, I did stop for almost a year and got roped back into it when a few friends brought it up that they were playing (and oddly enough I never really did much with them anyhow).
Why do I continue to play?
Because I've already invested years of time into it and sometimes I have nothing better to do. I have a sense of community with my guild that I've actively participated with for over three years now. Sometimes it's nice to have a fictional world to escape into; taking your mind off of things you have no real control over in the real world.
That's about it. Have a good day/night at work! ;)

Why did you start playing?
i started playing when i saw a friend of mine play it while he was showing it too us. he was playing on a private server back then and said he could get us too play also. which we did for a few years.
at which point we decided to go retail around 2.4. we all knew what too expect from 1-70 and already did it often enough too have a favroite path, but i was still blown away by the difference between retail and private making the game even better.
so i started private, but i never truly started till i went retail.
Why do you continue to play?
this is an easy question, and the answer is: cause of the guild im in.
its a really awesome guild, we always having fun with each other online while being a small guild.
and we're raiding on quite a decent level.
the progressive raiding with the very pleasent atmosphere is what keeps me hooked.

I started playing in late BC because I had a roomate who played, and he told me to try it out. I continue playing because I would be playing video games of one sort or another anyway, and this is one that I enjoy and think I'm fairly good at. Also, I have a number of friends who I play with who are a lot of fun, and I enjoy a game where I can socialize while I play.

Started playing:
I played TCGs for a long time. LOTR, and then moved on to WoW TCG. For ages, I resisted playing the game, but decided to give it a try in late 2008.
Continue to play:
Endlessly entertaining. Each expansion gives new worlds to explore, new levels to get, new gear to get, new things to do. And as I play tons of alts, I get to do it on all of them and keep entertained. I did quit recently because of CRZ for two months, but came back because GW2 dungeons sucked.
Cheers.

Started playing because my friends were playing.
Came back and continued playing because of the social aspect, believe it or not!
That and the pleasure of getting new items and doing new quests.

I started playing in the spring of 2006. My unit had just returned from a year tour in Iraq. One of the other sergeants in my infantry platoon bought a brand new, high speed laptop...and WoW. Being a former Dungeons and Dragons dice thrower in my younger years I was immediately drawn to the game.
My friend lived in the barracks and I lived off base with my wife. Whenever I was on base and had a chance he would let me log on and play. My first toon was a Troll hunter. My buddy played a Dwarf hunter, so we continually argued over which faction was better. We had a lot of fun running around and exploring every nook and cranny. Barrens chat also provided us with many great laughs.
When I got out of the Army I enrolled in college. Of course I needed a new computer for this endeavor, and why not convince my wife that WoW would keep me out of trouble in my free time. While I was in school I only played during summer and winter break. It was rough but I needed to concentrate on school and my family.
Now I'm a junior high teacher and I play WoW year round. My buddy still plays (and is now a filthy Worgen hunter lol). I'm still in love with Trolls and their lore, although I switched to a warrior.
WoW still keeps me out of trouble and has allowed me to make and keep some great friends in Azeroth.

Wymon
I started playing cause of a girl surprise surprise lol, she was playing and we had been talking for about a year when she told me about the game i bought it to play on a server with her, started out with a warrior named Wymon hence my WoWhead name, at that time i didn't know anything about fansites or where to go for info, i don't think i even went to the official site other than to register my account, so i started playing with her, but then when we were not playing together i just kept leveling that charachter till i outleveled her because i was such a noob i didn't even know i could make more than one charachter per server, but yea i have played ever since with a few small breaks in between. I ended up getting my second charachter a hunter named Keishmida to 60 about 2 weeks before BC came out, I missed all the raids in vanilla wish i hadn't.

I remember getting the disc of WarCraft 3 and looking at the trailers - World of Warcraft was intriguing at the time and even today, it still fascinates me as a game. I come back to World of Warcraft, starting anew just to look at the game again and again - it fascinates me just as always.
The community is also a good reason to come back to play the game. Oh, I also love roleplaying on World of Warcraft since it has a vast lore that can be used to build your own character and properly immerse yourself in the game.
