Well, Asa gave me the idea so I took the liberty
This thread is for the purpose of warlock-specific off topic banter
If you're new to the Warlock forums then welcome! We're pretty nice here as long as you aren't lazy or rude so feel free to stop by in the abyssal maw and chill for a bit
If you're new to Warlocks in general, and you just read the FAQ, here's a great video guide by Maana:

.
Last but not least, don't be so easily offended, this is the internet. Besides, the vast majority of us wanna help people out anyway so its all good
MOAR EDITS TO COME!
I'd like to open the floor with: is anyone else like me, in choosing a warlock-like character in every game they play? for example in dragon age i chose a blood mage, which was ridiculous fun
feel free to de-rail topic at your discretion
have fun!

+1 internets for thread creation!
hopefully we can get this thread rolling, vote for sticky and keep other threads derailment-free and content-rich (or at least you guys can do the content-rich bit while i try and act all aloof ^_^).
i like the "abyssal maw" thing if only because there is a website called "the warlocks den" already.
i play lock-types in the game i play but don't go so far as to avoid mage-types.
though, in reality, i play the final fantasy black mage trope in every game i play, wow being no exception.

Reposting fin's Pulp Fiction link, because it's so effing epic, but mods had it removed :(
Edit:
another one to top it all off ^_^

renamed
also just to clarify... blood mage is far from WoW mage and very similar to warlock
they have lifetap (named something else) and they have a mode they go in where they spend health to fuel spells instead of mana :)
also in Guild wars, necromancers were the &*!@

P.S. Lookout, I think your sig should welcome asa back :)
ah, no need to mention me at all.
i was planning on leaving completely but it turned out that i really did care about the forum and the community we have here. all in all, a bit of an embarrassing episode really.
i never played GW but i have a guild-mate who is really excited about GW2 so i'm likely to be trying that when it appears.

i've actually been doing a bit of old content soloing lately, inspired by the recent topics on the subject. what surprised me is that it's much easier on a lock than it is on a DK. i got anzu a while ago but no new MgT mount or attumen mount from the recent attempts.
the soloing got me to thinking about levelling builds though. i remember, when wrath launched, reading an article on the warlocks den by the world first (legitimate) level 80. a lock using what became the very popular SiLi/FG build.
however at the time it wasn't really something people were thinking about and his article was pretty much the first i'd heard of that build.
so, is there really any flexibility for interesting new ideas about levelling builds or do we all just pick the spec we like the most and go and level?
one of the things i really liked about SiLi/FG was the ability to level quickly AND take on elite/group quests solo. for this reason i'll probably go demo despite it not being really my favourite spec at the minute.

For cata you can really level as whatever you want... I've done all the zones on beta on multiple locks, and all three specs are viable for solo'ing the group quests.
Affliction has really lost most of its shine, ramp up time on DPS is not much fun and its self regen has been nerfed "to the ground". With soul harvest in place, it doesn't matter anyway... you can heal to full nearly instantly.
I actually haven't leveled as demo on the beta. Not really a fan of the play-style right now =/ Alot of demo is cooldown or proc based, and neither of those are very good things to fall back on while questing... It doesn't really provide more survivability with how things are right now either. No spec can safely pull packs of mobs with current mob damage being what it is, and SiLi/FG is more than dead. Not only is it impossible to get SiLi while being demo, Siphon Life sucks big time now xD Not that survivability is an issue, anyone can survive a substantial beating (and with healthstones not requiring a reagent, we can nom nom on those all day long).
Standard cookie cutter destro is what I've been using the most. The burst is amazing for questing, and the massive health pools make group quests a breeze. I don't usually even pull out the voidwalker for em, I just pull and nuke. Nether Protection and Nether Ward are simply godlike. Backlash might be worth investing in, but more often than not mobs would die without me needing to cast more than one or two incinerates.
TBH Hybrid builds are completely dead. The simplification of talents ensured that... And its not a bad thing. Everything you need is built right into your talent specs =D

interesting.
since 4.0.1 released i've made 4 or 5 new characters (i've only got one free slot on my main server so i delete them after each time) levelling each one to 40 or so to see what the early levels are like for different classes with the changes to talent specialisations. the lock i made went destro immediately and with the complete removal of downtime (soul harvest on the rare occasions that it becomes an issue) the high burst made it very strong and lots of fun.
it sounds like that doesn't really change as we transition into cataclysm which is fine by me. the only thing i did find at those lower levels is that any group quest i couldn't burst through was pretty much undoable solo. you say all three specs are fine for group quests, does that mean most of the elites you're asked to kill aren't that much tougher than the regular mobs or that they're so strong that none of the specs can do them? ^_^

man i wish i had half your stamina/patience.
I havent played any beta material, but i must say that it's amazing how destro shines as it is right now on live. I've always been a hardcore affliction fan in any pvp circumstance, yet now i just find destro is incomparable one vs. one and more importantly fun as hell. And amusingly enough, this holds up in pve. When im forced to raid in my now pvp-tailored destro spec, it still out-dps'es my old affliction pve build.
P.S Great idea for a thread!

i gotta say all this talk about how great destro is gets me very excited...i've always been hardcore destro/demo refusing to go affliction even when it was OMG L33T IN ARENA D00D!11!
this might be the push to get me to re-sub hehe

Pretty much both... <=3 man group quests are easy, 5 mans are impossible to solo. Same way it was in Wrath really.
EDIT: Although TBH, I don't know of many group quests added in cata so far... When I think about it, I can only remember one giant in Vashjr that you can kill and he drops an item that starts a quest... I think.

ok cool. looking forward to sinking my teeth into it all. i never felt so ready for an expansion before the previous two released.
by which, of course, i mean i'm SO sick of wrath content.
good to see this stickied. i'm glad the mods support these threads because i think they can only be good for the board as a whole.

Man I wish I could level toons as fast as you must be able to asakawa. Seems like it's taken forever to get my priest as high as it is now.

i think it's probably an exponential thing. once you get a couple levelled up you get to know the quests so well that it goes crazy quick and just comes down to spending the time sat in front of the computer.
